Gymnastics Canada – WINNIPEG, MB (May 21, 2016) – Patricia Bezzoubenko of Toronto, ON and Alexandra Chtrevenskii of Baie D’urfe, QC topped the standings in the Senior High Performance and Junior High Performance categories respectively after the second day of competition at the 2016 Canadian Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics on Saturday in Winnipeg.

Bezzoubenko scored 17.300 in clubs and 17.400 in ribbon to finish the day with a total score of 69.050. Second place Carmen Whelan of Aurora, ON is 7.100 points behind with a total score of 61.950 (14.750 clubs; 15.900 ribbon), while Katherine Uchida of Toronto, ON remains in third with a total score of 61.000 (14.750 clubs; 15.400 ribbon).

With a 15.150 in ball, Chtrevenskii scored the top marks for the day in junior open and now sits 2.200 points ahead of second place Natalie Garcia of Mississauga, ON. Aretehya Haberman of Calgary, AB is in third with a total score of 52.250.

“It went pretty well, and I’m satisfied with my results. I didn’t have any major mistakes or drops. Of course, there’s always place to improve myself and I’ll be working on that,” said Chtrevenskii who has shown marked improvement over the last year. “My coach has been putting more pressure on me and I’d really like to thank her for that. I’ve been taking practices more seriously the past year and I’m enjoying it more and more. Next year I’m moving to senior which means more concentration, harder routines, but I’m excited to go.”

In the novice all-around competition, Michel Vivier of Vaughn, ON topped the podium with a total score of 52.500 after placing first in free and clubs. Elizabeth Savchenko of Montreal, QC took silver with a total score of 51.600 while Katherina Bakhmutova of Toronto, ON placed third with a score of 46.750.

“I’m really happy,” said Vivier. “I’ve been training a lot. Each year it’s like third, second, and first now, so I’m really happy because I’ve been training all year just for this competition.”

The top-15 Junior and Senior High Performance athletes now advance to the finals and all-around competitions tomorrow which also feature finals and all-around for the junior groups.
