BC Rugby – Welcome to another wonderful season of Rugby in the beautiful Province of BC.  To those of you who’ve enjoyed a summer off, we’re delighted to have you back and ready to hit the ground running for the 2018-19 season.  As always, we’ll be keeping you up to date on a weekly basis with rugby information from Mini Rugby Jamborees right up to top clashes in the Senior Men’s and Women’s Leagues.  So kick back and enjoy some rugby news from our fantastic community here in British Columbia.

Senior Leagues Return for Season Opener

The start of BC Rugby’s 2018/19 Senior Club Rugby season kicks off this Saturday, marking the first of many weekends of rugby action in the Province. There will be action across all eight of the Men’s and Women’s senior leagues, as well as Barnard Cup and Times Cup over on Vancouver Island.  The Senior Club Leagues will run through Fall, Winter and Spring, culminating in the BC Rugby Club Finals where champions of each league will be crowned

We’ve done a bit of a reshuffle on our website, meaning now it should be even easier to navigate to your favourite league table form the top menu on the BC Rugby website.  There will be some ongoing adjustments during September, so please bear with us while we fix any remaining bugs.

Interior Clubs Ready for Saratoga Cup Showdown

This weekend is the culmination of the Interior Club Leagues, with the annual Saratoga Cup once again taking place in Penticton.  Teams from the very furthest reaches of the Province will come together to battle it out for the coveted silverware and title.  Defending champions Terrace Northmen will be looking to take the cup back north with them once again but they will face stern competition from the Rocky Mountain Rogues (Kootenay League), Vernon Jackals (Okanagan League) and Prince Geroge Gnats (Interior League).

The semi-finals kick off on Saturday, September 8, with the Final and consolation matches following up on Sunday.  You can find plenty of information on the tournament via the weblinks below.  So if you fancy escaping the rain this weekend, head to Penticton for a showcase of the best Rugby from the Interior.

Canada U20 Men’s Team Can’t Stop Fiji’s Frenzy

Canada’s U20 Men’s XV suffered their third defeat of the pool stages at the Junior World Rugby Trophy in Bucharest, Romania.  Despite an impressive first-half performance that saw them in a commanding lead, their opponents stepped up a gear and brought an intensity that the Canadian players found hard to contain.

It has been a tough competition for the young team, narrowly losing their first two games to Portugal and Uruguay.  They will now face hosts Romania for 7th place on September 9 in their final game of the tournament.  Check out the match reports in the links below.  Sunday’s Match will be streamed live via the World Rugby facebook page at 7:00am (PT).

BC Athletes Selected to Youth Olympic Games Team

Rugby Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee, nominated a 12-player roster to represent Team Canada at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires, Argentina October 13-15.  Canada qualified for the tournament through winning the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association competition in Las Vegas in March, defeating the USA in the gold-medal final at Sam Boyd Stadium.  BC Athletes Hunter Czeppel and Maggie Mackinnon have both been named to the side, while Kally King and Maggie Banks were both named as non-travelling reserves

Langley Rugy Club Turns 50
 
Langley Rugby Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year, a commendable landmark for the Fraser Valley club.  To mark this very special occasion, the club will be hosting a grand event on Saturday, September 22 and would like to extend invitations to all past and present players and supporters of the club.

Blood Drive: Give Blood….just not on the Field!
 

It is often said that Club Rugby is the lifeblood of this sport…well time to prove it!

Capilano RFC have recently become Partners for Life with Canadian Blood Services and are challenging all other BC Rugby Clubs to do the same! Starting SeptEMBER 8, 2018, with the kick-off to the 2018/2019 season, Capilano RFC will be encouraging regular blood donations by all club members, friends and family and are hoping other BC clubs will follow suit.
 
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
One club member needs to register your team as a Partner for Life at https://blood.ca/en/blood/how-do-i-start-team to receive a Partner ID which will track all blood donations by anyone connected to that ID.

The Rugby Development Officer is employed to deliver participation and performance strategies across their region to increase the quantity and quality of Rugby players, coaches and officials. This position will take direction from the Head of Rugby and will work collaboratively with regional and local stakeholders.

The ability to build working relationships with Member Clubs and other relevant stakeholders coupled with a thorough understanding of sport development and the Canadian Rugby landscape will be essential to the successful achievement of this position’s objectives.

TRY Rugby Fall Starts This Weekend!
 

TRY Rugby is a fantastic opportunity to experience the game of rugby in a SafeWelcoming & Fun atmosphere.

A TRY Rugby Event is a non-contact rugby event held as an introduction to the game for participants of any age. These events are typically flag rugby introductory sessions (Rookie Rugby) or small jamborees for potential players who are new to the game and want to give it a go.

This is a great opportunity to come out and get your hands on a rugby ball if you’ve never had the chance. This is a totally no pressure and fun environment where your friends, family, or workmates can give rugby a try.
