BC Rugby – Vancouver, BC – April 20, 2017: The BC Rugby High School Girls’ Provincial 7s Championship will take place this weekend on Friday April 21 and Saturday April 22 at UBC in Vancouver. The High School 7s Championships are in their fourth year and previously coincided with the Langford stop of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series. However, this year the stop was moved to the end of May which did not allow for an overlap.

This event is organized with the support of the BC High School Girls Rugby Association (BCHSGRA), which has been the governing body for girls’ rugby in BC for many years. They have been the main contributor to the growth of female rugby in BC and continue to lead the way. Rugby sevens has opened a lot of opportunity for high schools as it requires fewer players to start a team thus increasing the number of schools running Rugby programs.

Day 1 of the Championship will see games between all 4 pools of teams concluding in Bowl and Cup Quarterfinals. Day 2 will start at 9:15am with the Semi-Finals and at 11:15am the Finals will occur with the Cup Finals at 1pm. The complete schedule is available here

This year the participating teams are from:

  • Shawnigan Lake School
  • McRoberts Secondary School
  • Valleyview Secondary School
  • Prince Rupert Secondary School
  • Yale Secondary School
  • Cowichan Secondary School
  • Handsworth Secondary School
  • Duchess Park Secondary School
  • Abbotsford Senior Secondary School
  • Belmont Secondary School
  • Houston Secondary School
  • Chatelech Secondary School
  • Oak Bay High School
  • Lake City Secondary School
  • Westsyde Secondary School
  • Elgin Park Secondary School

Live streaming will be available on BC Rugby’s website for Day 2 of the Championship. Admission is free. Everyone is encouraged to come out and support these talented female players.

Also taking place this weekend is the Lower Mainland Junior Boys Provincial Invitational 7s Tournament at St. George’s School in Vancouver, BC. The tournament is taking place on Friday April 21st with the first game kicking off at 10am and the playoffs at 2:20pm. The event is also free for spectators and a great opportunity to witness young rugby talent in the province. You can read more about the event here.
