Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton —Justin Kripps and Alex Kopacz slide to seventh after posting fastest second run in two-man bobsleigh

KONIGSSEE, Ger.—Barrett Martineau finished ninth in the Overall World Cup men’s skeleton standings following a 10h-place result at the season finale in Konigssee, Germany on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Martineau clocked at two-run time of 1:42.44 on the 16-corner track

I’m super happy with today’s result. A top-10 was a great way to finish the season,” said Martineau. “Being the last World Cup of the season, I tried to take it all in and enjoy myself so racing with a positive frame of mind made a big difference for me today.”

It was the third top-10 finish for the Calgary sophomore on the World Cup since the Christmas break. He had back-to-back career-best eight-place finishes in Park City, Utah and in Whistler, B.C.

“It was a big goal of mine to finish in the top-10, so achieving that by finishing ninth overall in the World Cup standings is a huge achievement,” said Martineau, who was well back in the high 20s in the standings last year. “I think I’ve made a huge jump this year. Everything from my push start, to my actual sliding technique, to being a better athlete as a whole.

“My confidence is at an all time high, knowing that I can compete with the best, so I’ll continue to keep working in this right direction, moving up the ranks and I’m excited to see what next season has in store.”

Latvia’s Martins Dukurs won the overall men’s skeleton title after winning eight of the nine races including the World Championships. Dukurs capped off the season Saturday with a golden time of 1:40.82.

Korea’s Sungbin Yun was second at 1:41.38, while the younger Dukurs – Tomass – won the race for the bronze despite a sloppy second run, finishing with a time of 1:41.56.

Canada’s Dave Greszczyszyn capped off his season with a 12th-place finish after posting a two-run time of 1:42.71. A season highlighted with a career-best fifth-place finish in Whistler, the Brampton, Ont. native finished 10th overall in the standings.

Justin Kripps (Summerland, B.C.) and Alex Kopacz (London, Ont.) were the top Canadians in seventh spot in the men’s two-man bobsleigh race. Sitting in 10th spot after the first run down the track in the Bavarian Alps, Kripps and Kopacz capped off the two-man season by posting the fastest second run at 49.87 for a combined time of 1:39.78, moving them into seventh spot.

Korea’s Yunjong Won and Youngwoo Seo won their second race of the season with a time of 1:39.50. Switzerland’s Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann celebrated the silver medal at 1:39.55, while Germany’s Francesco Friedrich and Candy Bauer slid onto the bronze-medal step of the podium with a time of 1:39.65.

Calgary’s Chris Spring had CFL receiver, Sam Giguere (Sherbrooke, Que.) on his brakes for the first time this season in two-man action. Spring and Giguere, who joined the team at Christmas, were 19th with a combined time of 1:40.55.

The final World Cup race of the season is set for Sunday in Konigssee, Germany with the men’s four-man event.
