Badminton Canada – Ottawa ON – Badminton Canada today announced the staff it intends to nominate for the Rio Olympic Games Canadian Badminton Team. With a slightly more than three months before the end Rio Olympic qualifying period, Canada is in a position to potentially qualify up seven athletes for the Games.

Ram Nayyar (Vancouver BC) will be leading the Canadian Badminton Team as both Head Coach and Team Manager. Coach Nayyar was the Head Coach at the 2012 London Olympics and has acted as Head Coach and Team Manager most recently at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Pan Am Games.

“It is both an honor and a privilege to be chosen as Head Coach for the Rio Olympics.” stated Coach Nayyar. “The athletes who qualify will have put in a tremendous amount of effort and time in the process to reach these Olympics and I will do everything I can to support their performances, no task being too small and no effort being too great. I’m looking forward to being part of Team Canada and leading the badminton Contingent at this event.”

 

Assisting Coach Nayyar in Rio will be long time National Team Coach Jeff White (Calgary, AB). Coach White most recently has coach the Canadian teams at the 2014 Commonwealth Games as well as coached the Canadian team at both the 2014 and 2015 BWF World Championships. He also supported the Canadian badminton teams’ preparations for the London Olympics in 2012.

 

“I am honoured to have been selected as part of the badminton team staff for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.” Said Coach White, “I am dedicated to assisting the team in any way I can, leading up to and throughout the Games, focusing foremost on the best performance and well-being of our athletes.”

 

Rounding out the Canadian badminton staff is physiotherapist Marc Rizzardo (Burnaby BC). Rizzardo served as Chief Therapist for the Canadian medical team at both the 2010 and 2012 Olympics and is the head of Badminton Canada’s integrated athlete support team.

 

“Badminton Canada is fortunate to have such highly qualified coaches and staff as part of our 2016 Olympic program.” indicated Badminton Canada President Anil Kaul. “Their familiarity with the players and past experiences at the Olympics and other international events make Ram, Jeff and Marc an excellent team to handle all the challenges on and off the courts.  They will have the full support of our Association, community, and country.”
