Baby Luge Canucks Celebrate Gold and Silver at Home in Calgary

CALGARY—The next generation of luge athletes put on a show on home ice at Winsport’s Canada Olympic Park on Friday with the youth women winning the gold and silver medals.
Calgary’s Ava-Rose Luscombe clocked the second fastest times in both heats down the 10-corner track to win the Youth A Women’s race with a combined time of 1:16.009.
Trinity Ellis, of Pemberton, B.C., was sitting in first spot after her opening blast down the Olympic Track in Calgary. But the 16-year-old dropped into the silver-medal position after posting the third fastest time in the second heat, combining for a total time of 1:16.032.
Russia’s Elizaveta Yurchenko rounded out the women’s podium in third place at 1:17.391.
Canada’s Caitlin Nash grabbed the final spot in the top-five. Sitting in seventh spot after the opening heat, Nash posted the quickest time of the second run at 37.908 to finish with an overall time of 1:17.847.
West Vancouver’s Garrett Reid was the top Canuck in the Youth A Men’s race. The 15-year-old slid to seventh spot at 1:29.234. Calgary’s Devin Wardrope also finished in the top-10, placing ninth at 1:29.582.
Slovakia’s Marian Skupek won the men’s race with a time of 1:28.469. Latvia’s Gints Berzins was second with a time of 1:28.486. Russia’s Pavel Repilov rounded out the youth men’s podium in third at 1:28.572.

The world’s best junior athletes will hit the start handles on Saturday when the Youth and Junior World Cup resumes in Calgary.
