Canadian Luge Association —Canadians celebrate two gold, one silver medal in youth racing—

CALGARY—Three of Canada’s most promising young luge athletes – Sam Judson, Carolyn Maxwell and Malcolm Klager – charged onto the podium at the season-opening Junior Luge World Cup in Calgary on Thursday.

Two Calgary girls finished one-two in the youth division races. Sam Judson climbed two spots in her second trip down the Olympic Track to post a golden time of 1:18:774. Carolyn Maxwell, who had the fastest opening run at 39.337 dropped into the silver medal position when the dust finally settled with a time of 1:18.780.

Ashley Farquaharson, of the United States, rounded out the youth girls podium with a time of 1:18:898.

Calgary’s Makena Hodgson placed fifth with a time of 1:19.806.

The track to the podium continued for the Canadians in the youth men’s race. Whistler resident, Malcolm Klager, slid to his first ever gold medal at the international level. Klager clocked the top time in both runs to finish on top with a combined time of 1:31.142.

Klager shared the podium with two Russian athletes. Alexey Dmitriev was second at 1:31.263. Alexander Dmitriev slid to the bronze medal with a time of 1:31.326.

The next generation of elite luge athletes will continue their first World Cup of the season in Calgary on Friday with the junior men and women’s singles races at 3 p.m. followed by the team competition at 6:30 p.m.
