AUGER-ALIASSIME AND PELIWO FALL IN THE SEMIFINALS OF THE SUBARU SHERBROOKE FUTURES PRESENTED BY ROUGE FM
Tennis Canada – Montréal, March 12, 2016 – Félix Auger-Aliassime (Montréal, QC) and Filip Peliwo (Vancouver, BC) were both eliminated in the semifinals of the Subaru Sherbrooke Futures presented by Rouge FM on Saturday. The US$25 000 International Tennis Federation tournament being played on the Christian Bourque indoor courts at the Rock Forest recreation centre in Sherbrooke will therefore be without a Canadian finalist in 2016.
Auger-Aliassime, who was playing in his first semifinal at the pro level, was defeated 6-4, 6-2 in 64 minutes by Lloyd Glasspool of Great Britain, ranked no. 441 in the world. Glasspool broke the young Canadian’s serve three times in the match and was not broken once on his own serve. The 22-year-old Brit won the first two ITF Futures titles of his career in 2015 and will play in his first final of 2016 on Sunday.
In Saturday’s second semifinal, Peliwo was defeated 7-5, 7-5 by rising American Stefan Kozlov. Despite the loss, Peliwo hit twice as many aces as his opponent, 12 compared to 6. There was not much to separate the two players, but Kozlov managed to bring up his level towards the end of both sets to come away with the victory. At 18 years of age and ranked no. 338 in the world, Kozlov is one of the top prospects for American tennis. He has a pair of pro titles, including one earlier this year after defeating Canadian Philip Bester in the final. Kozlov was also crowned junior Wimbledon champion in 2014.
After receiving wildcards for the main draw, Auger-Aliassime and Peliwo will now head to Drummondville to compete in the $50,000 Drummondville National Bank Challenger.
The Subaru Sherbrooke Futures presented by Rouge FM singles final between Glasspool and Kozlov will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
