Lee is one of 64 archers – 32 boys and 32 girls – from 44 countries selected for the third edition of the quadrennial event, which has previously been held in Singapore (2010) and Nanjing, China (2014). To be eligible for Buenos Aires 2018, participants must be born after Jan. 1 st , 2001.

The archery segment starts on Oct. 12 and includes individual and mixed team tournaments. For the team component, athletes from different nations are paired and compete in the standard mixed team format. Lee, a 16-year-old who attends Kitchener Collegiate Institute, qualified for the YOG thanks to his silver medal at the American Continental Qualifier held last May in Guatemala City. That result came on the heels of an equally impressive fifth-place finish at last October’s world youth championships in Rosario, Argentina.

Thanks to Lee’s participation, Canada will be represented in archery for the third straight Youth Olympics. Toronto’s Timon Park competed in 2010 and Ottawa’s Eric Peters in 2014, with the latter returning from China with a bronze medal earned alongside Finland’s Mirjam Tuokkola in mixed team competition.

“Ben is a talented up-and-coming archer and this will be a good opportunity for him to have a major Games experience,” said Archery Canada national recurve coach Shawn Riggs , who accompanied Lee to Mexico this past week for a training camp attended by all archers representing countries from the Americas. “In the past, Ben has done a great job at rising to the occasion, so I’m looking forward to see what he can achieve in Buenos Aires.”
