U SPORTS – TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Katerine Savard from the Montreal Carabins and Matt Forbes of the Saskatchewan Huskies are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending January 29, 2017.

Savard, a second-year pre-school and elementary education student from Quebec City, won four gold medals at the final RSEQ swim meet of the season over the weekend hosted by UQTR. The Rio Olympic bronze medalist and 2013 Universiade champion claimed first-place finishes in the 50-metre and 200-metre freestyle, along with the 4×100-metre freestyle relay and the 100-metre butterfly. Savard won the races by 1.13, 1.32, 5.18 and 1.27 seconds respectively, helping then-ranked No.3 Montreal earn the team title.

Basketball players Kiera Rigby of the UPEI Panthers and Catherine Traer from the Carleton Ravens, along with Alberta Pandas volleyball player Mariah Walsh were also

nominated for the women’s award.

Forbes, a fifth-year education major from Regina Beach, Sask., recorded back-to-back double-doubles as Saskatchewan swept Mount Royal. The Huskies veteran scored a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds – including five offensive – in an 82-62 win on Friday, before posting a 20-point, 12-board performance in a narrow 90-87 victory on Saturday. Forbes also tallied three blocks and two steals in the pair of contests.

Saint Mary’s Huskies basketball player Marquis Clayton, Montreal Carabins volleyball player Gabriel Chancy and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks hockey player Andrew Fritsch were the other male nominees.
