U SPORTS – TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Katie Polischuk from the Regina Cougars and Curtis Stockton of the Calgary Dinos are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending January 15, 2017.

Polischuk, a fifth-year kinesiology and health studies major from Brantford, Ont., recorded 45 points and 15 rebounds in a weekend sweep of the Manitoba Bisons, en route to becoming the 11th Regina player to reach the 1000-point mark. The veteran forward scored 19 points in a 93-44 win Friday before notching a double-double Saturday with another 26 points to reach the school milestone along with a career-high 12 rebounds in a 92-59 victory.

Nipissing Lakers hockey player Kaley Tienhaara, Laval Rouge et Or basketball player Jane Gagné, and Dalhousie Tigers volleyball player Emma Ciprick were also nominated for the women’s award.

Stockton, a fifth-year arts student from Melbourne, Australia, racked up a total of 60 kills in two wins over MacEwan on the weekend, setting a new single-game conference record in the process. The veteran outside hitter had 20 kills and nine digs in a 3-1 win against the Griffins Friday, followed by a 40-kill, 12-dig performance on Saturday night, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to lead the Dinos to a 3-2 comeback win. The 40-kill night set a new Canada West mark for a single match, surpassing the previous high of 36 set in 2010. 

Hockey players Trevor Morbeck of the Guelph Gryphons and Hunter Garlent of the Saint Mary’s Huskies, along with Bishop’s Gaiters basketball player David Belanger were the other male nominees.
