Anderson dominates 800 free, Wog wins at wall at Canadian Swimming Championships
Swimming Canada – EDMONTON – The high points on opening night of the Canadian Swimming Championship included a statement by Olivia Anderson in women’s 800-metre freestyle, and a thrilling women’s 200-m breaststroke where Kelsey Wog got the gold by three-hundredths of a second.
At the Kinsmen Sports Centre, the 17-year-old Anderson defended her 800-m freestyle title at the CSC with a winning time of eight minutes 41.27 seconds. The Etobicoke Swimming standout, who will represent Canada at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championship in Maui later in August, was under 33 seconds on 12 of the 16 lengths.
Anderson also has the fastest seed time for the women’s 1,500, which is on Sunday.
“I’ve kind of been training right up to this – I’ve been swimming a lot on my own,” said Anderson, whose podium including Island Swimming’s Danica Ludlow (8:45.00, silver) and Sophia Saroukian (8:48.48) of the host Edmonton Keyano theSwim Club. “In the past, I have done well without a lot of rest. We wanted to go into it and see how close I could come to my best times. Considering how I was approaching it, I am quite happy with how it went.”
Island Swimming’s Peter Brothers won the men’s 1,500-m freestyle in 15:20.45.
Wog, 17, who is joining the University of Manitoba Bisons this fall, clocked 2:27.21 in 200-m breaststroke to shade Pointe-Claire Swim Club’s Ashley McGregor (2:27.24).
“My goal was just to have a solid race and race, not just swim,” Wog said. “My experience from the past helps me know what I’m going into and stay focused and not get distracted.”
The CAMO Natation club had a sweep in 50-m freestyle. Karl Krug captured the men’s sprint in 23.26 seconds. In the women’s 50, Arianne Mainville swam 25.63 to led a Quebec sweep with Victoria Poon (25.82) and Sarah Fournier (25.90).
The CSC is a final dress rehearsal for the Junior Pan Pacs teams. Eighteen-year-old Matthew Mac, who will be part of the team headed to Maui, produced
a 2:03:22 200-m backstroke to nab a bronze medal.
“I was strong on the third 50 and brought it back stronger than I did this morning in the prelims,” said Mac, who represents the Oakville Aquatic Club. “For this meet I definitely want to get as close to the podium in as many events as possible because I know it’s going to be tough competition internationally.”
Friday’s evening session begins at 6 p.m. Alberta time. The program includes finals in 100-m backstroke, 200-m freestyle and 400-m individual medley.
