Alberta Sport Connection – Medicine Hat, AB – More than 2,500 participants, their families and spectators are expected to attend the 2016 Alberta Winter Games, February 13-16 in Medicine Hat. The Games provide an opportunity for Albertans 11 – 17 years of age to compete in a province-wide winter sports competition. 

“The Alberta Winter Games showcase some of our province’s best young athletes and are an important milestone in their athletic pursuits”, said Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism. “Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and families who, through hard work and dedication, have made it to Medicine Hat for the 2016 Alberta Winter Games. We wish you every success, and most importantly, great fun.” 

The Winter Games include a wide variety of sports from skiing, hockey, biathlon, curling and speed skating to synchronized swimming, fencing, artistic gymnastics, volleyball and boxing. For a full list of Winter Games sports and more information see: Alberta Games

“These games will showcase Medicine Hat and its wonderful community, facilities, organization and the thousands of dedicated volunteers involved in hosting these Games”, said John Short, Chair of ASC. “I know our athletes are looking forward to these Games and for some of them, this will be a stepping stone to bigger things as they go on to represent Alberta in national and international competitions.” 

The Alberta Winter Games are coordinated by Alberta Sport Connection in partnership with the host community. Participants earn the right to participate in the games by qualifying through zone playoffs throughout the province which are held for each sport. 

More than 40 athletes who have participated in the Alberta Winter Games have gone on to represent Canada at the Olympics, including: 2016 Games spokesperson, speed skater, Gilmore Junio; 3-time Olympian, world figure skating champion, Kurt Browning; Olympic Gold Medalist cross-country skier, Chandra Crawford; Olympic Gold Medalist mogul skier, Jennifer Heil; Olympic gold Medalist women’s bobsleigh, Kaillie Humphries; and 10-time Paralympic Gold Medalist cross-country skier, Brian McKeever. 

The Alberta government provided $300,000 in support of the 2016 Alberta Winter Games through Alberta Sport Connection, and an additional $70,000 through a cultural grant.
