Canada Soccer – Alberta, Quebec and Ontario lead the way on TECK Finals Day

10 October 2016

Alberta led the way on TECK Finals Day of the Canada Soccer Sport Chek National Championships. Girls U-14 Cup winners Foothills, Girls, U-18 Cup winners Edmonton Internazionale and Challenge Trophy winners Edmonton Scottish secured three titles for Alberta. Quebec’s Boys U-18 Cup titlists CS Repentigny and Jubilee Trophy winners Royal Select Beauport and Ontario’s Boys U-14 Cup Brampton East rounded out the winners. The U-16 Cup Finals in Lethbridge, AB were cancelled as organizers were faced with snowfall accumulations and adverse weather conditions that kept the playing surface unplayable.

All told Ontario, with six medals, Alberta with four, Quebec and British Columbia with three, Manitoba and Nova Scotia with singles secured the 18 available medal positions. Quebec’s Royal Select Beauport and Alberta’s Calgary Foothills clubs shared double medalist honours. Girls U-16 Finalist Woodbridge Strikers’ leading scorer Andrea Tyrrell (10 goals) lead the tournament despite not getting to play her team’s gold medal match.

CHALLENGE TROPHY – St. John’s, NL

Edmonton Scottish SC finally captured the Challenge Trophy as national champions. Three times runners up in their storied past, Edmonton Scottish SC won the title in St. John’s, Newfoundland Labrador at the 2016 Sport Chek National Championships

The heroics came down to the very dying minutes when Steven Wheeler hit a ball that beat the defence and the otherwise impenetrable Beauport goalkeeper Mario Gerges. The 93rd minute winner was the only goal in Edmonton’s 1:0 victory over Royal-Sélect Beauport at King George V Park on Teck Finals Day.

Royal-Sélect Beauport won their first Jubilee Trophy at the 2016 Sport Chek National Championships in St. John’s, Newfoundland Labrador. Three times runners up, the Royal broke through this year to capture their first national title.

Royal-Sélect Beauport won 2:0 over Richmond FC in the championship match at King George V Park on Teck Finals Day. Championship MVP Léa Chastenay-Joseph scored the opening goal in the first half followed by a Gabrielle Verret strike in the second half.

U-18 CUP – Vaughan, ON

Quebec’s CS Repentigny and Alberta’s Internazionale captured the Boys and Girls U-18 Cup respectively on TECK Finals Day from Vaughan, ON. Ontario’s Woodbridge Strikers were bronze medalists on the Boys side of the competition while Nova Scotia’s Halifax County United Girls also secured third place. Three of the four matches finished 1:0 as Philippe Proulx’s 8’ goal for Quebec was enough. Sophie Robertson pounced on a ball that wasn’t cleared in the 57’ for Alberta.

U-16 CUP – Lethbridge, AB

Due to deteriorating weather conditions and accumulated snow, Canada Soccer and the local organizing committee (LOC) have cancelled all matches for TECK Finals Day in Lethbridge, AB. Canada Soccer’s Competitions Committee will determine the next course of action at its upcoming meeting in November.

U-14 CUP – Moncton, NB

Alberta’s Calgary Foothills gave up their first goal of the Girls U-14 Cup on TECK Finals Day in Moncton. Unfortunately for British Columbia’s Surrey United and scorer Madelin Mah, it wasn’t enough. Foothills’ Olivia Kranjcec and Grace Moore gave the Albertans U-16 Cup Gold.

Brampton East were facing a similar challenge on the Boys side of the U-14 Cup. BC’s Fraser Valley did not concede during the group stage, however, Ontario’s Joraver Gill was able to score a howler of a free kick in the first half to secure the Gold Medal for Ontario.
