Tennis Canada – Montreal, September 7, 2016 – In addition to Eugenie Bouchard (Montreal, QC), who confirmed her participation in the National Bank Cup presented by Mazda a few months ago, Tennis Canada announced Wednesday that Françoise Abanda (Montreal, QC) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) have been awarded main draw wildcards for the WTA event in Quebec City.

Abanda, currently ranked no. 226 in the world, will be making her third consecutive main draw appearance, but will be looking to get past the opening round for the first time. Last year, she lost to Croat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and in 2014 she fell to Venus Williams. Earlier this season, the 19-year-old won the second ITF Challenger title of her career in Irapuato, Mexico. A few weeks ago, Abanda advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Montreal thanks to a win over China’s Saisai Zheng, ranked no. 61 in the world.

For her part, Wozniak will be competing in her ninth National Bank Cup main draw and will be making her twelfth career appearance at the tournament. Her best result in Quebec came in 2008 and 2009 when she reached the semifinals. The former world no. 21 is coming back following a long absence due to shoulder surgery. Wozniak, who is celebrating her 29th birthday today, started 2016 ranked no. 844 in the world and is now ranked no. 379. She was a semifinalist at the Granby National Bank Challenger this summer and a quarter-finalist at the Surprise Challenger in Arizona.

The official draw ceremony will take place on Friday at 5 p.m. at PEPS on the campus of Laval University. Hungary’s Timea Babos is slated to be the tournament’s top seed followed by Bouchard and defending champion Annika Beck of Germany.
