Recreation Association of the Public Service of Canada (RA): – Ottawa –  On Friday, the RA shared details on the prospective next phase of development for the RA Centre. Local MPP John Fraser was on hand to congratulate the RA on receiving an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Seed grant that allowed the RA to consult, research and develop the RA’s “Sport for Life Centre”, and hear more about the next phase of the development and the impact the Centre will have on the community.

“Thanks to the Seed funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the RA can expand upon the vision of the newly constructed House of Sport and focus on the principles of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) through future multi-use spaces design and programming,” said John Fraser MPP for Ottawa South.

The proposed facility could re-develop the central and east wings of the RA Centre. Providing a multitude of new play spaces, this new centre would be designed utilizing the principles of Sport for Life. Multi-use spaces will ensure that delivering the early stages of development (Active Start, FUNdamentals, Learn to Train) as part of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) will be integrated into the physical environment and the programming structure.

“As part of the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the RA was able to visit facilities across Canada and the US to observe programming, investigate space design, and invigorate the creative process,” shares Tosha Rhodenizer, RA Chief Executive Officer. “The stages of LTAD have helped crystalize our proposed development. We believe that our focus on the places and spaces and their connection to LTAD will allow us to leverage assets and design a sustainable environment. This concludes the initial layer of work required to determine the feasibility of such an innovative and ambitious endeavor.”

The opening of the House of Sport within the RA Centre is dramatically changing the RA’s culture and landscape, and positions the RA to collaborate with National and Multi-Sport Organizations on ideas related to LTAD. The House of Sport is a collaborative, innovative community offering sport organizations open office and meeting space.

“LTAD as a foundational philosophy has already informed the thought process in designing the conceptual facility,” shared Tosha. “We want to ensure that the play and common spaces encourage confidence, competence and community. The RA understands the importance of these ingredients in creating spaces full of energy and excitement.”
