Manitoba Badminton Association – The Manitoba Badminton Association’s Grade 7/8 Team Championships were held April 13 – 14th at Maples Collegiate. This is the fifth year this tournament has run with Shamrock School being crowned the champions in the first year.

Anticipation and excitement were evident in the gym as twelve Grade 7/8 teams from as far away as Leaf Rapids and Waterhen met last Friday and Saturday to crown the Grade 7/8 Team Champions.

Ninety-six Grade 7/8 students made up the teams. The teams battled each other in round robin play then started eliminating each other in the playoffs. When the dust settled the champions were the Shamrock Monsters who defeated the Blumenort Bengals in the gold medal tie. Blumenort has won the title twice. Rounding out the top three were the Arthur Meighen Eagles from Portage la Prairie in their first appearance at the tournament who triumphed over the Lac du Bonnet Chargers 1 for the bronze medal.

Coaches and officials also voted on two awards given out, the Team Spirit Award and the Sportsmanship Award. Due in part to a fantastic team cheer where the team performed a song for the enjoyment of the crowd, Shamrock School was awarded the Team Spirit Award. The Sportsmanship Award went to the Steinbach Christian Flames for their great behavior both on and off the court during the tournament.
