Rowing Canada Aviron – Immediate Release – Thursday, May 24, 2018

Organizers of the 2018 World Rowing Coastal Championships in Sidney, BC are excited to announce that registration is now open for the event in October 2018.

“This is an exciting step forward, bringing us one step closer to this historic event for rowing in Canada,” said Brenda Taylor, a double gold medallist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and race director, along with Julien Bahain, three-time Olympian and bronze medallist.

Organizers hope that rowers from across Canada and the United States will take advantage of this chance to compete in a world championship, including many rowers who have never experienced coastal conditions before.

“The championship is open to anyone,” Bahain said. “So this is a unique opportunity for all North American rowers to compete at an international level.”

Canadian and American athletes are invited to submit entries through RegattaCentral. The deadline is midnight on August 31, 2018.

“It’s important that you select the event with the correct country,” said Taylor. “For example, select Womens Open C1x (Canada) for members of Canadian clubs, Womens Open C1x (USA) for members of US clubs.”

Clubs outside of Canada and the United States can submit entries to their National Federation and the deadline will be set by each National Federation.

Clubs should contact their National Federation for more information.

The organizing committee for 2018 World Rowing Coastal Championships is looking forward to hosting the FISA team, the international body for World Rowing.

The group will spend a weekend in the Victoria area from May 25 to 27th to check out the race venue and meet the volunteers working hard to put on a world class event and put Canada on the coastal rowing map.

As part of the legacy of the event, the 48 coastal boats provided for the championship will be available for purchase by rowing clubs after the event, which could dramatically extend the reach of coastal rowing across Canada. https://www.wrcc2018.com/equipment-purchase/

This will be the first time that the World Rowing Coastal Championships come to Canada. Until now, it has been held in Europe and South America but never before in North America.

To add to the excitement of an already thrilling brand of rowing, the event will also feature a beach start, the first ever for this international competition.

The event has been endorsed by the Town of Sidney (Greater Victoria) where the venue will be located, and many sponsors have jumped on board in support of this history-making event.

The organizing committee is now busy with the logistics for the event which is expected to attract hundreds of participants from around the world.

There will be free access to the site for spectators and organizers hope to have large crowds to welcome the world’s best in coastal rowing.

The organizing committee is also eager to make the 2018 event environmentally sustainable, reflecting the importance of clean water to their sport.
