Changes to funding for 2017

For the past few years the NSGA has successfully provided core programs and services as required by our clubs and membership. As the Provincial Sport Organization of Golf in Nova Scotia our mandate has now expanded to require us to deliver more programs and services such as the Long-Term Player Development as well as High Performance training and support.

The golf industry as well as the NSGA has experienced a decline in membership over the past decade. Although reports indicate that more people are playing the game, memberships at the club level are declining.

So as to control costs and maintain our operations we, the NSGA, must implement some cost cutting measures in the next few years to ensure that our operations remain financial viable and maintain the long term success of our organization.

In 2017 the NSGA regrets it must suspend the Murray Purcell Bursary Program. This bursary was awarded annually to provide members with financial support for post secondary education. Since its inception, the program has provided NSGA Members with $100,000 in bursaries. We hope that this program may be reintroduced in the future.

The second change in 2017 affects the funding allocated for teams traveling to National Championships. The NSGA will continue to support teams competing in the following seven National Championships:

  • Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championship
  • Men’s and Women’s Senior Championship
  • Junior Boys and Girls Championship
  • Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship

Under the new funding structure individuals designated to represent Nova Scotia will receive a subsidy to offset the cost of travel to the Nationals. The following monies will be allocated in 2017 for team members (3 persons per team):

  • $500 per team member for the Canadian Women’s Amateur – Guelph, ON
  • $500 per team member for the Canadian Junior Boys – Kingston, ON
  • $500 per team member for the Canadian Junior Girls – Cumberland, ON
  • $500 per team member for the Canadian Men’s Am – Mississauga, ON
  • $750 per team member for the Canadian Men’s Mid – Regina, SK
  • $500 per team member for the Canadian Senior Women – Humber Valley, NFLD
  • $500 per team member for the Canadian Senior Men – Montreal. PQ

Team members will be responsible for booking all team related travel such as flights, accommodations and ground transportation.

The alternate for each will receive an exemption for their respective team for each National Championship however there will be no financial subsidy provided.

The NSGA continues to encourage teams to compete in the Atlantic Championship however no financial support will be provided.
