GAME 5:

Nova Scotia gave the home crowd something to cheer about Tuesday night at the 2017 Football Canada Cup as the team earned a 24-0 shutout victory over New Brunswick.

This game marked the third time these two squads have competed against each other in the past month.  Back in June, Nova Scotia swept New Brunswick 2-0 at the fourth annual Maritime Challenge, which is a home-and-home series.

New Brunswick conceded a pair of safeties to Nova Scotia to start of the scoring in the first half.

In the second quarter, Adre Simmonds sprinted into the end zone for a three yard touchdown.

At halftime, Nova Scotia enjoyed a 12-0 lead over New Brunswick.

Pelton Kelly added a 17 yard field goal for Nova Scotia in the third quarter.

Nova Scotia rounded out the scoring in the final quarter when quarterback Caleb Melanson connected with Dawson Keirstead for an eight yard touchdown reception.

Players of the Game for Nova Scotia were REC Dawson Keirstead (offence) and DL Aidan John (defence).  New Brunswick Players of the Game were Matthew Lafleur (offence) and Aidan Steeves (defence).

GAME 6:

It wasn’t easy, but British Columbia worked hard to accomplish a major feat at the 2017 Football Canada Cup.

British Columbia got their first win on Tuesday since returning back to the Football Canada Cup, defeating Manitoba 16-7 at Acadia University’s Raymond Field in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

After a scoreless first quarter, Keelan White rushed into the end zone for a 42 yard touchdown to give British Columbia the lead.

Manitoba responded back when quarterback Riley Vankoughnett found Eric Adams for a passing major.

Late in the second half, Manitoba conceded a safety to BC. With 34 seconds in the half, pivot Josh Haydu connected with Colburn Pearce for a 31 yard major.

At halftime, British Columbia enjoyed a 16-7 lead over Manitoba.

Timely defence plays in the second half didn’t allow Manitoba to score any points and secured the win for British Columbia.

Players of the Game for British Columbia were WR/RB Keelan White (offence) and LB/HB Dylan Rachel (defence).  Manitoba’s Players of the Game were WR Eric Adams (offence) and LB Eric Bujalski (defence).

GAME 7:

For the second consecutive year, Saskatchewan will play for gold.

On Tuesday, the team edged Ontario 11-9 at the 2017 Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. It was a rematch of the 2016 semi-final.

In the first half of the game, both offences had their share of challenges, especially with their passing games.  Saskatchewan was not able to get into a groove and find rhythm.  Ontario kept on feeling pressure from the opposing team’s defence.

Furthermore, Ontario took several penalties in the first half which ate up close to 200 yards.

Emmett Steadman opened the scoring in the first quarter when he added a 14 yard field goal.

At halftime, Saskatchewan held a narrow 5-0 lead after Steadman had a couple of rouges.

Brian Garrity was on fire in the second half as he added two field goals (19, 30 yards) to give Ontario the lead.

However, Saskatchewan responded by scoring the first touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter as Josh Donnelly connected with Bennett Stusek for a 28 yard touchdown pass.

In the fourth quarter, Garrity added his third field goal of the game – a 22 yard attempt.

With 14.4 seconds left in the game, Ontario had one last chance to score and earn a chance in the gold medal game.  However, Saskatchewan’s defence came through, forcing quarterback Ethan Martin to fumble the ball which resulted in a turnover.

Players of the Game for Saskatchewan were REC Bennett Stusek (offence) and LB Joshua White (defence).  Ontario Players of the Game were RB Keon Edwards (offence) and DL Christian Fecteau (defence).

GAME 8:

On Tuesday afternoon, Alberta was on the verge of pulling off a major upset at the 2017 Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Heading into the final minute of the game, Alberta clung onto a 12-10 lead over defending champions and top seed Quebec.

With 15 seconds left, Alberta’s chance to play for gold was dashed when Antoine Couture came though in a clutch performance and booted a nine yard field goal to propel Quebec to a 13-12 victory.

In the first half, offensive production was hard to come by for both teams and they were scoreless after one quarter of play.

Early in the second quarter, Jake Withrow added a 25 yard field goal to give Alberta the lead.  Less than two minutes later, his attempt at a second field goal went wide and out of the end zone.

Couture booted a 14 yard field goal to pull Quebec within a point of Alberta.

At halftime, Alberta led Quebec 4-3.

Jonathan Ericson connected with Segun Adeseye for a 23 yard touchdown in the third quarter.  Just over a minute and 22 seconds later, Quebec responded back as quarterback Lukas Boulanger snuck into the end zone for a 1 yard touchdown to keep pace with Alberta.

Alberta managed to get a single in the final minute of the game to go up by two points. However it was short-lived as Couture’s precision in those last 15 seconds of the game secured Quebec’s berth in the gold medal game.

Players of the Game for Quebec were REC Mathieu Robitaille (offence) and DB Anton Haie (defence).  Alberta Players of the Game were RB Matthew Peterson (offence) and DB Jacob Biggs (defence).
