2016 FINA World Short Course Championships: Seven U Sports athletes reach the podium at home in Windsor
U Sports – TORONTO (U Sports) – Seven current or former U Sports swimmers finished on the podium for Canada at the 2016 FINA Swimming Championships, in Windsor, Ont. that ended yesterday.
Rio Olympians Katerine Savard, Kylie Masse, Sandrine Mainville, Yuri Kisil, Markus Thormeyer, Hilary Caldwell, along with Kelsey Wog all left the championships with medals around their necks.
Two former members of the Montreal Carabins captured gold as Savard helped Canada finish first as a part of the 4×200-metre relay team, while Sandrine Mainville won gold with the 4×50-metre relay team. Savard would add a silver in the 4×100-metre relay, to go along with a bronze in the 4×50-metre mixed relay, which also featured Mainville, and a pair of current UBC Thunderbirds in Markus Thormeyer and Yuri Kisil.
Masse, the reigning U Sports Female Athlete of the Year who won a bronze medal in the 100-metre backstroke at the Rio Olympics, earned a silver medal in her specialty event, breaking her own Canadian record in the process. The Windsor, Ont., native and U of T Varsity Blue, who was swimming in front of friends and family in her hometown, also finished second in the 4×100-metre medley relay, sharing the podium with former Victoria Vike Hilary Caldwell.
On the last night of competition, Wog, a rookie from the Manitoba Bisons took home silver in 200-metre breaststroke race.
Canada finished sixth overall in the medal table with a total of eight medals (two gold, three silver, three bronze).
