Arctic Winter Games – Edmonton… Team Alberta North, had a strong performance at the 2016 Arctic Winter Games, March 5 – 12 in Nuuk, Greenland, earning 88 ulus, finishing third overall. 
 
“Congratulations to all our young athletes, coaches and mission staff on their great participation in the Arctic Winter Games,” said Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism, responsible for sport in Alberta. “We are all very proud of Team Alberta North’s performance and I hope this experience will encourage many of them to continue their athletic pursuits, supported by Alberta’s dedicated coaches and amazing communities.”
 
Team Alberta North captured 29 gold, 32 silver and 27 bronze ulus at the Games, which are an international sport festival bringing together athletes from Alaska, Greenland, Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavik, Nunavut, Yukon, Yamal (Russia) and Sapmi (Northern Scandinavia). The Arctic Winter Games is a unique competition, known as the “friendly games”, combining competitive and cultural aspects from each participating contingent.
 
“Alberta Sport Connection helps Albertans strive for excellence in sport,” said John Short, Chair of the Alberta Sport Connection. “The Arctic Winter Games are a unique event and we are proud of how these northern Alberta athletes performed in competition and represented our province.”
 
Team Alberta North’s flag bearer was Jordan Lundstrom, a cross country skier from Grande Prairie, who led the team during the celebrations at the Games Opening Ceremonies. Team Alberta North included 239 athletes, coaches, cultural participants and mission staff, from 34 Alberta communities north of the 55th parallel. They competed in 13 different sports and culture events including: snowshoeing; skiing; biathlon; cross country skiing; hockey; Dene Games; Arctic sports; wrestling and volleyball.
