Wheelchair basketball was first developed in the 1940s to engage war veterans in the benefits of sport. The 2018 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships (August 16-26 in Hamburg, Germany) will be the largest world championships in the history of the sport, and in fact one of the largest international parasport events outside of the Paralympic Games.
