Bio-banding. Bio-banding means grouping athletes on the basis of growth and maturation, rather than chronological age, to make competition more equal and prevent injury. The English Premier League is using bio-banding to support young player development, and last year held its first bio-banded youth tournament. Research on bio-banding is being conducted at the University of Bath in partnership with several English Premier League Academies to improve the development of youth soccer players.
