Position Summary

The Canadian Sport Institute Pacific is in search of an enthusiastic and committed individual for the permanent full-time position of Sport Physiologist at our Victoria Campus located at 4371 Interurban Road, Victoria, BC, V9E 2C5. The Sport Physiologist plays a supporting role in the technical operations of CSI Pacific’s Victoria performance lab and works with athletes and coaches in the daily training environment (DTE) and contributes nationally to Athletic Canada’s (AC) HP strategic aim of systematically guiding and supporting athletes along a sustainable pathway to Olympic and Paralympic medals. The Sport Physiologist provides physiology solutions to coaches and athletes (50% of service to middle and long-distance Olympic and Paralympic runners with 50% to other endurance-based sports. These duties include supporting the coaching staff to conduct physiological assessments, design yearly training plans, and provide excellent knowledge with altitude/heat and recovery management. The position supports targeted athletes and coaches by providing physiology based tools and metrics to monitor and assess training progress. The position collaborates with the wider Integrated Support Team (IST), to achieve a holistic approach to athlete development and performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading all aspects of physiology in the daily training environment (DTE), at Athletics Canada’s West Hub (primarily middle to long-distance runners), plus associated local endurance sports in testing, monitoring, data collection, processing and analysis
  • Fostering relationships with targeted athlete’s coaches and IST teams as identified by AC’s High Performance Director and/or Athlete Performance Advisors (APAs) to determine needs and philosophies
  • Providing comprehensive feedback of physiological test results to coaches and athletes and recommendations based on results
  • Supporting the coaches to monitor or prepare athletes for training or competition in different environmental conditions
  • Contributing to high performance coach development programs through presentations, workshops and written submissions
  • Contributing to the planning process of all National Team activities
  • Providing physiological support in targeted athlete’s daily training environments (DTEs), at AC training and/or altitude camps, pre-event holding camps and at competitions
  • Maintaining awareness of the latest physiology developments through seminars, courses and self-directed study
  • Contributing to the development of a national sports network through regular liaison with colleagues in other sport institutes, universities, and jurisdictions as it pertains to testing protocols and equipment
  • Recording physiological data, maintaining database, and providing input into database development and enhancement to optimize effective sharing of information and to ensure data is secure and accessible
  • Contributing to development of handouts and shared physiology content for best practices
  • Supervising interns and students as they enhance the DTE Actively participating in CSI Pacific team events, meetings, and professional development opportunities

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Advanced degree – MSc in Exercise Physiology
  • Minimum 3 years’ physiology lab experience working with elite sports and high-performance athletes
  • CSEP-CEP or CPT with High Performance Specialization or international equivalent (or ability to certify in the first 12 months)
  • Current CPR-C + AED (or willingness to certify in the first 12 months)
  • Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) or international equivalent (essential within the first 12 months)
  • Phlebotomy trained to take blood finger sample (essential within the first 12 months)
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary, high performance sport environment
  • Knowledge of competitive Athletics (emphasis on middle & long-distance running sport science
  • Ability to understand and perform descriptive, and inferential statistics
  • Programming skills (R or Lab View or Matlab or Python), Knowledge/use of Power BI, Knowledge/use of Smartabase and TrainingPeaks Database systems
  • Background as a coach and/or athlete is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Canadian and/or International Sport System is an asset
  • The ability to participate in national and international team travel
  •  Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of independence and initiative
  • Excellent oral communication skills in English
  • Proficient reading and writing skills in English
  • English-French bilingualism is an asset
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check for vulnerable sector

Salary Band

  • The annual salary for this position will be $60,000 – $80,000, depending on skills and experience. As well as a competitive benefits package.
