WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Tennis Canada is seeking a visionary and results-oriented leader to join Tennis Canada’s high-performance team in the role as Senior Director, High Performance (SDHP).  The SDHP will report directly to the Vice President of High Performance (VPHP).  In this pivotal role, and under the leadership of the Vice President of High Performance, you will help support and direct the strategic direction and execution of Tennis Canada’s high-performance systems with the goal of propelling Canadian tennis players to the highest level of international teams and individual results to help inspire Canadians to play, follow and support tennis.

You will also have the unique opportunity to shape the future of Canadian tennis by contributing in cutting-edge training/competition methodologies, providing world-class resources and support to athletes and coaches, and fostering a culture of excellence throughout the high-performance pathway and established system in place. You will have management duties leading a sports science, health, wellness, and safe sport internal team and collaborate with an array of stakeholders, including national and regional organizations, coaches, athletes, sports science experts, partners, and various support staff, to deliver programs that will help recruit, develop, and maximize the potential of Canadian tennis talent.

Keys Responsibilities

Strategic Planning, HP System Development & Governance

  • Under the direction of the VPHP, the SDHP will lead the implementation, and delivery of the HP strategic plan, operations and budgets  to ensure alignment with Tennis Canada’s sports science, health, wellness and safe sports departments to help deliver the HP strategic plan annual objectives.
  • Working with the Head of U15 Pipeline to replenishing the U15 pipeline talent (depth and quality) and converting top prospects to achieve the stated objectives. This includes administrative support that will integrate sports science, safe sport, well-being and policies through the operations of the U15 Prospect team and U15 Club support program.
  • Working with the Head of men, Head of women, and wheelchair tennis leader to provide systematic support. This includes administrative support that will integrate sports science, safe sport, well-being and policies through the operations of the Regional Tennis Centres, National Tennis Centre, National Camps and different Tennis Canada support Programs, with excellence.
  • Ensure strategy implementation is tracked/monitored with regular reporting of progress against agreed business metrics.
  • Build a strong systematic structure and to ensure a high-performance environment is established, maintained, and enhanced to drive the stated objectives.
  • Establish industry-leading health, wellness, clean sport, safe sport, and EDI (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) standards for the sport of tennis in Canada, ensuring compliance with relevant rules and regulations.
  • Work closely with the Tennis Canada tennis leaders (coaches, coaches lead) of the HP organization to help, implement off court strategies to make impactful differences on the court (Tennis specific results).
  • Work closely with provincial, national and international bodies to influence governance policies that impact Canadian tennis.

Leadership & Relationships

  • Provide strong leadership/management and direction to the high-performance team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. This team includes internal and external sports science, safe sport, health and well-being staff and partners.
  • Embody Tennis Canada’s core values of teamwork, innovation, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and promote and acknowledge them across the organization.
  • Provide innovative problem-solving around key operating and business challenges within the department.
  • Create a supportive and empowering environment for coaches, athletes, and support staff, fostering their personal and professional growth.
  • Forge strong relationships with key stakeholders in the high-performance tennis community to leverage resources and opportunities that enrich our high-performance programs.
  • Develop a strong partnership with the Tennis Development Team to align, coordinate and maximize resources and help bridge the Participation and HP tennis pathways.
  • Collaborate with external partners, such as Own-The-Podium, universities, research institutions, and other national sports organizations, to drive innovation and thought leadership in player development.

Athlete Support and Performance Analysis

  • Oversee the delivery of the overall high-performance environment by equipping key stakeholders with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to drive player development and achieve international success at various stages of development.
  • Drive the integration  and management of key Sports Science pillars to help become a leading national sport organization in sport science execution to help drive world class on court results.  Key sports science pillars include analytics, strength/conditioning/fitness, sports psychology, nutrition, annual planning, rest and recovery among other areas to be determined by the SDHP working in conjunction with the VPHP..
  • Establish a robust system for the analysis and evaluation of player performance and progress, utilizing data-driven insights to inform coaching and training strategies.
  • Stay abreast of technological advancements and incorporate appropriate tools and technologies to enhance performance analysis and decision-making processes.
  • Conduct ongoing analysis of global high performance tennis best practices to inform the direction and evolution of Tennis Canada’s high-performance programs and strategic plan.

WHO ARE YOU?

  • 10-12 years of relevant experience in driving world-class high-performance sport and operation plans.
  • A degree in sports science is required with a master’s degree preferred. Or demonstrate an equivalent degree of sports science management/leadership experience working with world class sports organizations/teams.
  • Experience of managing and developing talented high-performance teams and delivering sustained success.
  • A strong understanding of the International/national High Performance, high performance sports systems/teams is an asset.
  • Experience of leading and managing successful performance programs at World and/or Olympic/Paralympic level.
  • Ability to provide strategic direction/planning with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans, systems and results.
  • Experience in the specificities of the sport of tennis is an asset.
  • Ability to manage and communicate “up and down” within a diverse organizational structure.
  • Ability to develop strong external relationships with a wide array of stakeholders.
  • Comprehensive understanding of coaching, sports science/medicine, international competition, talent pathways.
  • Thorough understanding and appreciation of world class standards at key stages of development for high performance sporting environments.
  • Bilingual oral and written (French and English) is an asset.
