The Canada Games Council (CGC) is the franchise holder for the Canada Games, responsible for the management of the Canada Games and the development of the Canada Games Movement. Held once every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games represent the highest level of national competition for up and coming Canadian athletes. The Games have been hosted in every province and the Yukon Territory at least once since their inception in Quebec City during Canada’s Centennial in 1967, and are proud of their contribution to Canada’s sport development system in addition to their lasting legacy of sport facilities, community pride, citizen engagement and national unity. As the Games move from one host community to the next, the CGC provides the continuity, leadership and support to Host Societies in key areas through CGC’s transfer of knowledge program. The CGC also ensures effective long-term partnerships with National Sport Organizations, Federal-Provincial/Territorial governments, the corporate sector, broadcasters and the media.

The CGC Sport Committee is convened at the pleasure of the Board of Directors of the CGC and is delegated responsibility to consider and decide on matters of sport technical in nature and participant care and comfort. The terms of reference for the Sport Committee can be found here.

ROLE PROFILE

As a volunteer member of the CGC Sport Committee, you will work with other Committee members and staff to further the CGC’s strategic priorities as they relate to sport technical and participant care and comfort.

The Opportunity:

The CGC is seeking an individual to join the CGC Sport Committee for a minimum of one four year term and a maximum of two four year terms (maximum total commitment of eight years) who can commit to one to two in person meetings per year (two days each, typically held in Ottawa, ON) and several video conference meetings throughout the year (typically one hour in length). Expenses related to attending in person meetings will be covered by the CGC.

The Fit:

You are an experienced employee, volunteer, or contractor within the Canada sport system. You are keenly aware of the inner workings of a multi sport Games and the impact the planning and execution of a Games can have on its participants and its local sport community.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous employment or senior volunteer roles with Canada Games Host Societies or other multi sport Games Organizing Committees*;
  • Understanding of the operational planning and execution that goes into delivering sport, venues and/or athlete services at a Canada Games or other multi sport Games;
  • Understanding of Canada Games Technical Packages;
  • Understanding of CGC policies and how they impact Host Societies;
  • Broad understanding of the Canada Games;
  • Broad understanding of the Canadian sport system;
  • Previous or current employment with National Sport Organizations and/or National Multi Sport Organizations will be considered an asset.

*Due to real or perceived conflict of interest, individuals currently employed by a Canada Games Host Society will not be considered for this role.
