The Dinos Women’s Basketball Team in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Head Coach for approximately 5 years.

The University of Calgary Athletic Department supports 17 varsity teams and nine competitive clubs. A unit within the Faculty of Kinesiology, Dinos Athletics competes within the Canada West Conference of U SPORTS. Dinos Athletics is committed to competing with the very best university teams in Canada while building pride on campus.

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, this position requires significant travel as well as working on weekends, holidays and evenings. This position requires high physical demands. Medium to high levels of stress.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Player and Team Development – Develop highly competitive players. Plan and deliver year-round skill and physical development plans.
  • Technical Ability – Ensure that players are effectively performing techniques and in such a way that they are among the very best in U SPORTS. Annual improvement should occur.
  • Tactical Ability – As it relates to playing systems, ensure that the team takes advantage of its strengths and is prepared for competition.
  • Team Building – Direct your team to a common and cohesive goal and develop a team culture that fuels success in the classroom and on the field of play.
  • Recruiting – Recruit and secure commitments from talented student-athletes. These individuals should improve team performance and culture year over year. Maintain an active and strategic recruiting plan.
  • Academic Success – At all times, promote student academic success.
  • Sport Science and Medicine – Provide services (strength and conditioning, sport psychology, etc.) that are complementary to the university’s varsity medical team (athletic therapists, physicians, nutritionists, and other medical support personnel) and produce excellent performance results. Sport science and medicine progress should be measured and reported annually.
  • Youth Camps and Junior Development Programs – Plan and manage successful youth camps and development programs (within your sport) based on the number of weeks and facilities provided by the athletic department. This includes developing curriculum, hiring and training staff, ensuring customer satisfaction of participants, and working with department staff to grow these programs.
  • Effectively execute all required administrative duties in a timely fashion, in line with the department processes and schedules.
  • Comply and work with all University, Canada West, and U SPORTS playing and award regulations.
  • Adhere to department policies, procedures, and timelines.
  • Creation and management of yearly budget, plus regular reporting as required.
  • Accountable for the team budget.
  • Create a full seasonal plan (individual and team), taking into consideration all aspects of conditioning, technical, tactical, conference/non-conference competition, and academic requirements/commitments.
  • Community Engagement – Commit to and engage with team and department community engagement initiatives, including working with alumni groups.
  • University Engagement – Promote positive and collaborative relations within the university.
  • Fund Development – Raise and effectively manage (including working with the Athletics Development Team) the established annual target.
  • Personal Development – Keep up with innovation in the sport and exhibit a commitment to personal development, making use of department opportunities and individually customized experiences.
  • Code of Conduct – Adhere to the university, conference, and Dinos Athletics code of conduct.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of coaching experience in basketball, preferably at the college, university, junior, professional, or national team level.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to high-performance team building and player development.
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in a related field; master’s degree an asset.
  • Fully certified NCCP/Canada Basketball Train to Compete (T2C) certification required; equivalency and/or pathway to such certification may be considered.
  • Demonstrated commitment to SafeSport and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
  • Strong communication, administration, and budget skills required.
  • Knowledge of electronic communication systems and MS Office Suite an asset.
