Two Canadian para archers in competition today

SANTIAGO, CL – It was a quieter day in Santiago, Chile. While the able-bodied Canadian archers had a day off, the Canadian para archers had their turn to be on the shooting line for individual matches. The temperature did not let up, making it another warm day.

Only two Canadian archers were in action today, both out of Manitoba. Chris Waterman started the day off against the number 1-ranked archer Cristian David Correa Alvaran from Colombia and while he shot some strong ends, he unfortunately dropped the match with a score of 132-127. 

Rob Cox’s first opponent was Brazilian Reinaldo Vagner Charao Ferreira, who was ranked #3 after qualifications. He held onto a sturdy lead throughout the match and maintained it through to the final end, winning 137-135. With this win, he secured Canada an individual quota at next year’s Parapan Am Games. The next round, the quarter finals, saw Cox up against Omar Echeverria of Mexico. It was a tight score in the end, with Cox taking the win by a score of 137-136. This propelled him into the semifinals, allowing him a chance to shoot for his opportunity at a medal. Douglas Godfrey (USA) was awaiting the Canadian in the semifinal. Cox was unfortunately unable to come out on top in the end and lost the match 141-133. In the bronze medal match, Cox faced off against Correa Alvaran, the #1-ranked archer that his Canadian teammate Waterman faced in the ⅛ elimination round. Cox was unable to overcome the Colombian and finished the competition in 4th place. 

“I’m glad we got our spot for next year,” comments Cox at the end of his matches. “That was the most important thing that we needed. Coming back after 12 years, it was good to be able to finish 4th. Team Canada worked well this year, I enjoyed working with the group. Linda [Price] did a good job helping me. Some of [the matches], I could’ve done better and others I felt done. There were two archers above me in the standings and I know one of them quite well, getting to be able to shoot with him was really cool. I got him by a couple of points so he wasn’t bad. The other [opponent], I believe he was from Brazil, I had a good match against him.”

Today concludes Canadian participation in the 2022 Parapan Am Championships. Tomorrow, in the able-bodied competition, Eleanor Brug and Devaang Gupta will step up to the shooting line for the recurve mixed team event and on Sunday, Brug will shoot her match for the bronze medal.

Deux para-archers canadiens en compétition aujourd’hui

SANTIAGO, CL – Ce fut une journée plus tranquille à Santiago, au Chili. Alors que les archers canadiens sans handicap avaient une journée de congé, les para-archers canadiens ont eu leur tour d’être sur la ligne de tir pour des matchs individuels. La température n’a pas faibli, ce qui en a fait une autre journée chaude.

Seulement deux archers canadiens étaient en action aujourd’hui, tous deux du Manitoba. Chris Waterman a commencé la journée en affrontant l’archer colombien Cristian David Correa Alvaran, classé numéro 1, et bien qu’il ait tiré quelques bonnes volées, il a malheureusement perdu le match avec un score de 132-127. 

Le premier adversaire de Rob Cox était le Brésilien Reinaldo Vagner Charao Ferreira, qui était classé n°3 après les qualifications. Il a conservé une solide avance tout au long du match et l’a maintenue jusqu’à la fin, gagnant 137-135. Grâce à cette victoire, il a assuré au Canada un quota individuel pour les Jeux parapanaméricains de l’année prochaine. La ronde suivante, les quarts de finale, a vu Cox affronter Omar Echeverria du Mexique. Le score a été serré, Cox l’emportant sur le score de 137-136. Cela l’a propulsé en demi-finale, lui donnant la possibilité de tenter sa chance pour une médaille. Douglas Godfrey (É.-U.) attendait le Canadien en demi-finale. Cox n’a malheureusement pas réussi à s’imposer et a perdu le match 141-133. Dans le match pour la médaille de bronze, Cox a affronté Correa Alvaran, l’archer classé au premier rang que son coéquipier canadien Waterman a affronté dans la ronde éliminatoire ⅛. Cox n’a pas réussi à vaincre le Colombien et a terminé la compétition en 4e place. 

« Je suis heureux que nous ayons obtenu notre place pour l’année prochaine, » commente Cox à la fin de ses matchs. « C’était la chose la plus importante dont nous avions besoin. Après être revenu après 12 ans, c’était bien de pouvoir finir 4e. L’équipe canadienne a bien travaillé cette année, j’ai apprécié de travailler avec le groupe. Linda [fPrice] a fait du bon travail en m’aidant. J’aurais pu faire mieux pour certains [matchs] et je me sentais bien pour d’autres. Il y avait deux archers au-dessus de moi au classement et je connais assez bien l’un d’entre eux, le fait de pouvoir tirer avec lui était vraiment cool. Je l’ai battu de quelques points, donc il n’était pas mauvais. L’autre [adversaire], je crois qu’il était brésilien, j’ai fait un bon match contre lui. »

Aujourd’hui se termine la participation canadienne aux Championnats parapanaméricains de 2022. Demain, dans la compétition pour les personnes valides, Eleanor Brug et Devaang Gupta monteront sur la ligne de tir pour l’épreuve par équipe mixte à l’arc recourbé et dimanche, Brug tirera son match pour la médaille de bronze.
