Sport Manitoba – Maddy Mitchell and Nicole Boyle stood side-by-side on the podium for the second time after earning bronze in the double canoe 200-metre final today. Meanwhile, the swimming trio of Oksana Chaput, along with Special Olympics athletes Sam Currie and Quinlan Roberts, combined for three more medals in the pool. On the soccer pitch, Manitoba’s male team gave up the match’s opening goal to New Brunswick before responding with two of their own to win 2-1 and advance to the semifinals. Team Manitoba golfer Ryan MacMillan had another strong day on the links and is now tied for third in the male individual standings entering the final round of play at Southwood Golf & Country Club.

There were many near-podium finishes for Manitoba in canoe kayak today, but only Maddy Mitchell and Nicole Boyle managed to secure another medal for Team Manitoba. It was Mitchell and Boyle’s second medal in canoe as a team, previously earning silver in the double canoe 1000-metre final on Monday. It was also Mitchell’s third medal including her bronze in the canoe 1000-metre final. The final day of competition in canoe kayak falls tomorrow, when the canoe and kayak athletes will compete in both the sprint distance of 200-metres and the endurance 5000-metre races.

Following another exciting and successful evening in the pool, Manitoba’s trio of Oksana Chaput, Quinlan Roberts, and Sam Currie has collected eight medals. Chaput won her third medal of the Canada Games with a bronze effort in the 100-metre butterfly. Roberts and Currie finished in second and third place in the Special Olympics 50-metre backstroke. Chaput and Currie join athletes Victoria Tachinski and Emma Gray as the only members of Team Manitoba with three medals each in the Canada Summer Games.

Manitoba’s male soccer team allowed the opening goal to New Brunswick before Max Dragojevic tied the game for the home side prior to half time. Then midway through the second half, centre back Josh Munoz broke the deadlock to give Manitoba the prevailing lead in an important 2-1 win. The victory advances Team Manitoba to a semifinal matchup with Alberta on Friday which will be broadcast on TSN.

Another strong day on the golf course by Ryan MacMillan, who shot a three-over par 74 today, leaves him tied for third in the male individual rankings. MacMillan sits just five shots back of the overall leader entering the final day of golf at Canada Summer Games.

Several individual Team Manitoba wrestlers will square up in semifinal competition on Friday. The brothers from Flin Flon, Hunter Lee and Carson Lee, have both advanced. Fellow Manitoba wrestlers Jessica Rabet, Khaled Aldrar, and Kyle Steeves have also advanced in their respective weight classes.

Team Manitoba male volleyball was featured on TSN in quarterfinal action versus Alberta today. The home side lost in straight sets and is now slated to face Saskatchewan in a placing game on Friday. Meanwhile, Manitoba’s female team kept off the court on Thursday after earning a bye to the semifinal tomorrow. That match will be at 8 p.m. versus Ontario at what will be a loud crowd at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Cycling road race events concluded today, with Manitoba cyclist Willem Boersma finished shy of the podium in the male individual race. Boersma raced to fifth place in the field, which is also where Manitoba’s top female finisher Mary Prendergast had finished in the female road race on Wednesday.

Intense semifinal action takes place for both Manitoba’s female volleyball and male soccer teams on Friday. A win would send each team to the gold medal game in their sports. Manitobans also remain in strong contention to medal tomorrow in canoe kayak, swimming, and wrestling.
