Tennis Canada – After a dream week, Canadian Layne Sleeth falls in the final

Repentigny, September 2, 2017– Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and Serbia’s Marko Miladinovic were crowned champions on Saturday of the 32nd edition of the National Bank Canadian Junior Open, a Grade 1 ITF junior event held in Repentigny, Quebec.

After a dream week that saw her win all of her matches in straight sets and defeat the no. 11 and no. 14 seeds in the tournament, Canadian Layne Sleeth fell just short of the girls’ singles title, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to top seed Kostyuk in the final. Kostyuk captures her second junior trophy of the season after claiming top honours at the junior Australian Open in January, the first Grand Slam of the year. The Ukrainian, who celebrated her 15th birthday in June, is currently ranked no. 3 on the ITF world junior rankings.

In the boys’ singles final, Brazilian Matheus Pucinelli De Almeida and Miladinovic put forth an impressive display of shot making. The two players were even until the opening set tiebreak which Miladinovic, ranked no. 10 on the ITF world junior rankings, was able to win and continued to put pressure on his opponent with some aggressive net play to take the match in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-3.
