Ferguson and Naumovski share opening-round lead of Ontario Peewee Girls’ Championship; Diogenous and Lee tops boys’ leaderboard
Golf Ontario – CAMBRIDGE— The third edition of the Ontario Peewee Championship saw beautiful conditions, on July 31 at Puslinch Lake Golf Course, as the first round got underway. The girls took to the course first and saw a pair of players jump out to a share of the lead. Hornby’s Annika Naumovski and Ottawa’s Isabella Ferguson each fired a four-over (76) and sit in top spot. Over on the boys’ side it is another tie for first as Cambridge’s Andreas Diogenous and Markham’s Kevin Lee each shot one-under (71).
Ferguson, from eQuinelle Golf Club, got out to a nice start finishing the front nine one-over, including a birdie on the sixth. She played the back nine three-over, but did notch a birdie on the 16th. As for Naumovski, a Brampton Golf Club member, she was even through nine, before a four-over back nine.
Rounding out the top three was Burlington’s Myranda Quinton at 10-over (82). Quinton, from Blue Springs Golf Club, was five-over on the front nine but had some trouble on the back nine. However, thanks to a pair of birdies, she finished the back nine five-over and sits alone in third.
In the boys’ championship, it was Diogenous and Lee setting the bar for the rest of the field. Diogenous, a Whistle Bear Golf Club member, did his damage on the front nine finishing two-under with a trio of birdies on four, six and eight. He would drop to three-under with another birdie on the 12th but a pair of bogeys brought him back to one-under for the round.
As for Lee, from Station Creek Golf Club, he was even through the front nine, with a birdie on the sixth. He drained a birdie on the 14th to get to one-under for the day.
Sitting in third is another Station Creek Golf Club member, North York’s William Lin. Lin was one-under at the turn thanks to a pair of birdies on seven and nine. He would go on to play the back nine one-over to finish the round at even par (72).
The second and final round gets underway tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. For complete tournament information, including leaderboards and pairings, see the tournament sites at: https://gao.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/gao17/event/gao1724/index.htm for the Boys’ Championship and https://gao.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/gao17/event/gao1725/index.htm for the Girls’ Championship.
