He finished first overall following Tuesday night’s final races

Kingston, June 8, 2022 – Felipe Cardoso from Quebec City, QC, was crowned 2022 Canadian eSailing Champion following the final events held Tuesday night.

Competing against 17 other finalists, who were selected according to their regular season ranking, Felipe Cardoso finished first overall after winning one race, finishing third three times and coming up with a 5th-place result over the five races that were held Tuesday in the J-70 class at the Aarhus venue with a wind of 18 knots.

In the final of the second edition of this competition presented by Helly Hansen Canada, a Proud Supporter of the Canadian eSailing Championship, Felipe Cardoso finished seven points ahead of defending champion Andreas Koechli, from Toronto, ON, and 20 points ahead of 2016 Olympian Lee Parkhill. The top three finishers received Helly Hansen kits valued at close to $2,000 in total.

“I’m really happy to win against such a strong group of eSailors,” said Felipe Cardoso, who finished second in the overall ranking at the conclusion of the 2022 regular season. “I knew I had a chance because of my qualification position, but you never know how the races will go.”

Felipe Cardoso explained the strategy he used on his way to his first title: “I was cautious on the starts, avoiding early starts or any other penalties, and I was sailing with the shifts, not taking many risks.”

For the 2022 Champion, the Canadian eSailing Championship was a way to get back to the sport.

“It’s been years since I’ve been in a sailboat, and the game and energy Sail Canada put in this Championship has brought me back a little closer to the sport I like so much. I hope this will push me to look for a club and get back on a real boat!” he said.

Qualified for the World eSailing Championship

Felipe Cardoso, Andreas Koechli and Lee Parkhill also qualified for the 2022 World eSailing Championship, an event that is held annually during the fall and sanctioned by World Sailing. The final date for this year’s competition remains to be confirmed.

The rest of the top 10 competitors at the Canadian eSailing Championship also qualified for the international event. Following is the full list of Canadian sailors who earned a spot at the 2022 World eSailing Championship:
