Gymnastics Canada  – CALGARY, AB (March 18, 2017) – Canadian junior artistic gymnast Felix Dolci of Laval Excellence Gymnastics Club stood atop the podium with a gold medal in the all-around final on day one of competition at the University of Calgary International Cup.

Dolci had solid routines across all six apparatuses and finished with 75.700 points and the gold medal. Julian Brutchin-Roose and Paul Juda of the United States finished just .150 points back of Dolci to tie for second place.

“I’m really proud of my performances today and really happy about the results,” said Dolci following the award ceremony. “I worked hard in training and finished well. I was most surprised by my pommel horse routine, I didn’t expect to finish so well.”

David Sandro of Gold Medal Gymnastics in Ontario, had a strong high bar routine and the best score in the event, but his overall efforts fell just short of the podium in the all-around, finishing with 75.400 points and landing in fourth place.

In the junior team action, Dolci and Sandro came together with Alexander Watters of Halifax Alta Gymnastics to form Team Canada 2 and finish in second place behind the Americans with a score of 151.800 points. Team Canada 1 including Darren Wong (Phoenix Gymnastics, BC), Evgeny Siminiuc (Futures Gymnastics, ON) and William Emard (Laval Excellence, QC) finished just over one point back of their Canadian counterparts in third place.

“I feel this meet has been a good start to the new cycle,” said Tony Smith, National team director for men’s artistic gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. “It’s giving us a lot of information for the team including what we have to fix and what we need to prepare for the future. There are some super talented young guys that are working in the right direction and following the program and I think with continued good work from the athletes and all the coaches, this will be a good start to the 2020 cycle.”

In senior men’s competition, Evan Cruz of Halifax Alta Gymnastics was Canada’s top finisher in the all-around finals, scoring 76.600 points and finishing 7th overall. Jeremy Bartholomeusz of Toronto Gymnastics International, finished just .400 behind Cruz in 8th place.

Team Canada 1, comprised of Batholomeusz, Anderson Loran (Taiso Gymnastics, SK) and Zachary Clay (Twisters Gymnastics Club, BC) finished in third place in team competition with a score of 159.000.
