A Canadian delegation of 122 is attending the 28th winter world university games, including 88 student-athletes in alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, curling (women & men), hockey (women & men) and snowboarding.

In total, over 1,600 athletes from 57 countries will take part in the biennial multisport event in the Central Asian city of 1.7 million.

“This is a proud moment for Team Canada,” said chef de mission Ari Grossman from the University of Waterloo. “About three quarters of our delegation has arrived in Almaty, and everyone is excited and eager to get going. So far, everything has been first class and it’s safe to say our student-athletes are in for a memorable experience.”

“The raising of the Canadian flag is really a special moment,” said hockey player Guillaume Asselin from the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières. “What strikes us so far is how warm and welcoming people are. We all feel that this Universiade will be an exceptional event.”

“It was a ton of fun. The local people had a ton of great energy and really got the celebrations going,” added cross country skier Kyla Vanderzwet from Western University. “It was awesome to get to interact for the first time with our fellow athletes from other Canadian teams, and we’re definitely looking forward to getting to know everyone over the next two weeks.”

Team Canada officially jumps into the action on Saturday when the women’s hockey team faces China at 4:30 p.m. local (5:30 a.m. Eastern Time), live online at FISU TV. A few hours after the game, the Canadian flag bearer for Sunday’s opening ceremonies will be announced at a reception hosted by H.E. Shawn Steil, Canada’s ambassador to Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan.
