XI Men’s Pan American Championship – CAN vs. GUA/VEN

Parana, Argentina – The Canadian Men’s National Team remained undefeated with two Super Round wins at the XI Pan American Championship, defeating Guatemala 1-0 followed by an 8-1 victory over Venezuela in six innings. The two wins improved Canada’s Super Round record to 4-0 with one game remaining against Cuba on Friday.
 
The first game against Guatemala saw Canadian pitcher Devon McCullough (Saskatoon, Sask.) go toe-to-toe with Guatemala’s Jorge Segura. After McCullough struck out the side in the top of the inning, Segura hit a batter and walked two others before Shane Boland (St. John’, N.L.) scored on a wild pitch. Guatemala got a leadoff single to start the second, but McCullough struck out the next three, and Segura walked two more in the bottom of the inning but was able to work his way out of the inning.
 
McCullough struck out the side again the following inning, with Canada drawing two more walks but was unable to score. A leadoff double in the fourth put a runner in scoring position for Guatemala, but a bunt attempt was popped out followed by a ground out to third and a strikeout as McCullough was able to keep the runner from scoring.
 
Segura struggled with illegal pitches and issued 10 walks throughout the game but held Canada without a hit until Mathieu Roy (St-Gervais, Que.) lined a single over the shortstop in the bottom of the sixth. On Canada’s side, McCullough continued to cruise and struck out all six batters he faced over the last two innings to seal the shutout win.

McCullough struck out a huge total of 18 batters, allowing only two hits and one walk in the complete game shutout, while Segura allowed one run on one hit and ten walks with 14 strikeouts.
 
Against Venezuela, Canada jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Jason Hill (St. John’s, N.L.) led off with a single, moved up to second when a sacrifice bunt by Cory Jones (Leduc, Alta.) was thrown into center by the catcher and scored on a fielding error by the shortstop on the next play to open the scoring. A single to right by Boland scored Jones, with Derek Mayson (North Vancouver, B.C.) crossing the plate from third on a double play on a ground ball to the shortstop.
 
The following inning, Colin Walsh (Petty Harbour, N.L.) reached on a fielder’s choice and raced around the bases to score from first when Hill hit a soft liner over the second baseman for a single. A walk by Jones moved Hill up to second, followed up by a single to center by Mayson to score Hill giving Canada a 5-0 lead. In the bottom if the fourth, Roy drew a two-out walk followed by a hit by pitch to Ezekiel before Walsh lined a shot over the right fielder for a two-run double.
 
Venezuela finally got something going against Canadian pitcher Sean Cleary (Harbour Main, N.L.) in the top of the fifth, starting the inning with three straight singles to load the bases before scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to extend the game. Cleary was able to get out of the inning with a strikeout leaving two runners stranded and the score 7-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Justin Laskowski (Warman, Sask.) and Roy started the inning with back-to-back singles followed by an intentional walk to Ezekiel and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Patrick Burns (Saskatoon, Sask.) for the run-rule win.

Cleary held Venezuela to one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 12 batters over six innings. Hill and Boland each singled twice and drove in a run, with Walsh adding a two-run double and Mayson contributing an RBI single. Roy, Jones and Laskowski each chipped in with a hit.
 
Earlier in the day, the United States (1-2) defeated Venezuela (1-3) in Super Round action. Other scheduled games on Thursday include Argentina (1-1) taking on Guatemala (0-3) at 5:00pm EDT followed by Cuba (2-0) at 8:00pm EDT. Canada’s final Super Round game against Cuba is scheduled for 5:00pm EDT on Friday.-SC-

Championnat panaméricain masculin XI – CAN c. GUA/VEN

Paraná, Argentine – L’équipe nationale masculine du Canada est demeurée invaincue avec deux victoires en ronde super au Championnat panaméricain XI, battant le Guatemala 1 à 0 suivi d’une victoire de 8 à 1 contre le Venezuela en six manches. Les deux victoires ont amélioré la fiche du Canada en ronde super à 4-0 avec un match à jouer contre le Cuba vendredi.

Le premier match contre le Guatemala a vu le lanceur canadien Devon McCullough (Saskatoon, Sask.) affronter Jorge Segura. Après que McCullough a retiré les frappeurs du Guatemala en ordre sur des prises en début de première manche, Segura a frappé un frappeur et a accordé des buts sur balles à deux autres avant que Shane Boland (St. John’s, T.-N.-L.) a croisé le marbre sur un mauvais lancer. Le Guatemala a obtenu un simple pour commencer la deuxième manche, mais McCullough a retiré les trois frappeurs suivants sur des prises, et Segura a alloué deux autres buts sur balles en fin de manche mais a été capable de s’en sortir de la manche.

Segura a eu de la misère avec des lancers illégaux et a émis un total de 10 buts sur balles lors de la partie, mais a tenu le Canada sans coup sûr jusqu’à ce que Mathieu Roy (St-Gervais, Qc) a frappé un simple au-dessus de l’arrêt-court en fin de sixième. Du côté du Canada, McCullough a continué à rouler et a retiré les six derniers frappeurs qu’il a affrontés au cours des deux dernières manches pour assurer la victoire par blanchissage.

McCullough a retiré un total de 18 frappeurs au bâton, n’accordant que deux coups sûrs et un but sur balles dans le blanchissage de sept manches, tandis que Segura a accordé un point sur un coup sûr et dix buts sur balles avec 14 retraits au bâton.

Contre le Venezuela, le Canada a rapidement pris les devants 3 à 0 en fin de deuxième manche. Jason Hill (St. John’s, T.-N.-L.) a commencé avec un simple, est avancé au deuxième but lorsqu’un amorti sacrifice de Cory Jones (Leduc, Alta.) a été lancé au champ centre par le receveur et a marqué sur une erreur défensive par l’arrêt-court sur le prochain jeu pour ouvrir le pointage. En fin de quatrième, Roy a forcé un but sur balles avec deux retraits suivi d’un lancer qui a atteint Ezekiel avant que Walsh a claqué une flèche au-dessus du voltigeur de droite pour un double de deux points.

Le Venezuela a finalement été capable de produire quelque chose contre le lanceur canadien Sean Cleary (Harbour Main, T.-N.-L.) en début de cinquième, commençant la manche avec trois simples consécutifs pour remplir les buts avant de marquer un point sur un ballon sacrifice pour prolonger le match. Cleary a réussi à s’en sortir de la manche avec un retrait au bâton, laissant deux coureurs sur les buts et le pointage 7 à 1. Cleary a limité le Venezuela à un point sur quatre coups sûrs et un but sur balles tout en retirant 12 frappeurs sur des prises en six manches. Hill et Boland ont chacun réussi deux simples et ont produit un point, Walsh a ajouté un double de deux points et Mayson a contribué un simple d’un point. Roy, Jones et Laskowski ont chacun contribué avec un coup sûr.

Plus tôt dans la journée, les États-Unis (1-2) ont battu le Venezuela (1-3) en action de la ronde super. Les autres matchs à l’horaire de jeudi incluent l’Argentine (1-1) contre le Guatemala (0-3) à 17h00 HAE suivi du Cuba (2-0) à 20h00 HAE. Le dernier match du Canada en ronde super contre Cuba aura lieu à 17h00 HAE vendredi.
