Valérie Maltais earns top-10 finish in Allround event at World Championships

Teammate Ivanie Blondin ranked one spot behind Maltais in 11th

HAMAR, NORWAY – Valérie Maltais was Canada’s top performer in the Allround competition at this year’s World Speed Skating Championships, finishing the two-day event in 10th position.

Maltais cracked the top-10 in all three of her distances, finishing eighth in the 500m (39.49) and ninth in both the 1500m (4:08.23) and 3000m (1:58.09). Those results helped the native of Saguenay earn the best finish of her career at this competition, topping her 17th place finishes from 2019 and 2020.

I didn’t have an ideal training week before arriving, but I did the best I could. I had the legs, the speed and the midset to do good races and managed to execute well.” – Valérie Maltais

Teammate Ivanie Blondin (Ottawa, Ont.), who was crowned vice-champion the last time this competition was held in 2020, finished the weekend one position behind Maltais in 11th. The double medalist from Beijing 2022 was sixth in the 500m (38.97) and 11th in the 3000m (4:10.73) and 1500m (1:58.74). Meanwhile, Lindsey Kent (Winnipeg, Man.) finished 16th in the overall rankings.

Topping the women’s podium on Sunday was Dutch skater Irene Schouten (158.974), who won her eighth career World Allround title. She was joined by Miho Takagi of Japan (+3.31) and Antoinette de Jong of the Netherlands (+8.24).

Jordan Belchos (Toronto, Ont.) was Canada’s top male skater at the competition, ranking 17th overall. Teammate Ted-Jan Bloemen (Calgary, Alta.) finished 20th overall.

Bringing home the men’s title was Sweden’s Nils van der Poel (148.696), who finished ahead of Patrick Roest of Netherlands (+22.80) and Bart Swings of Belgium (+30.44).

The international long track season comes to an end next week with the ISU World Cup Final in Heerenveen, Netherlands. CBC Sports will have live streaming and broadcast coverage of the competition on both Saturday and Sunday.

Maltais termine 10e dans les épreuves toutes distances aux Mondiaux

HAMAR, NORVÈGE – Valérie Maltais a réalisé la meilleure performance du Canada dans les épreuves toutes distances des Championnats du monde de patinage de vitesse de cette année, alors qu’elle a complété la compétition d’une durée de deux jours en 10e place.

Maltais s’est retrouvée dans le top-10 dans chacune de ses trois distances, terminant en huitième place au 500m (39,49) de même qu’en neuvième place autant au 1500m (4:08,23) qu’au 3000m (1:58,09). Ces résultats ont permis à l’athlète de Saguenay d’obtenir le meilleur classement de sa carrière à cette compétition, elle qui a fini 17e en 2019 et 2020.

« Je suis vraiment contente de mon week-end de course. Une 10e position au classement général est mon meilleur résultat en carrière à cette compétition! En venant ici, je ne savais pas à quoi m’attendre. Je n’ai pas eu une semaine d’entraînement idéale avant de venir ici, mais j’ai fait du mieux que je pouvais. Les jambes, la vitesse et ma tête étaient là pour faire des bonnes courses. » – Valérie Maltais

Sa coéquipière Ivanie Blondin (Ottawa, Ont.), qui avait été couronnée vice-championne la dernière fois que cette compétition avait eu lieu en 2020, a complété la fin de semaine un rang derrière Maltais, en 11e place. La double médaillée de Beijing 2022 a fini sixième au 500m (38,97) ainsi que 11e au 3000m (4:10,73) et au 1500m (1:58,74). Lindsey Kent (Winnipeg, Man.) a terminé 16e au classement général.

La première marche du podium chez les femmes a été occupée dimanche par la patineuse néerlandaise Irene Schouten (158,974), qui a remporté le huitième titre de championne du monde toutes distances de sa carrière. Elle a été accompagnée de la Japonaise Miho Takagi (+3,31) et de la Néerlandaise Antoinette de Jong (+8,24).

Jordan Belchos (Toronto, Ont.) a été le meilleur Canadien de la compétition du côté des hommes, obtenant la 17e place au classement général. Son coéquipier Ted-Jan Bloemen (Calgary, Alb.) a fini 20e au classement général.

Le titre chez les hommes est allé au Nils van der Poel de la Suède (148.696), qui a devancé le néerlandais Patrick Roest (+22.80) et le belge Bart Swings (+30.44).

La saison internationale de longue piste prendra fin le week-end prochain à l’occasion de la Finale de la Coupe du monde de l’ISU qui aura lieu à Heerenveen, aux Pays-Bas. CBC Sports assurera la webdiffusion en direct et la couverture télévisée de la compétition, samedi et dimanche.
