Canadian Sport Institute Ontario – TORONTO (January 18, 2017) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) is pleased to announce the hiring of the following new staff:

  • David Bentley, Sport Physiologist
  • Jeff Louie, Sport Lab Manager
  • Murray McCullough, High Performance Athlete Development Advisor

Elton Fernandes, the former Sport Lab Manager will move to a new role as a Sport Scientist at CSIO.

David will work closely with high performance coaches to develop and deliver physiological support to athletes in the daily training environment. His role will include conducting physiological assessments, designing yearly training plans, managing recovery, and collaborating with the other practitioners who make up Integrated Support Teams (IST), to achieve a holistic approach to athlete development.

As the Sport Lab Manager, Jeff will oversee CSIO’s Sport Lab facilities and equipment at all CSIOlocations and develop testing and monitoring protocols for targeted sports. Jeff will work with Performance Services staff to delivery world class sport science and sport medicine support to high performance athletes and coaches.

In his role as a High Performance Athlete Development Advisor, Murray will work with targeted Provincial Sport Organizations and their technical leaders, athletes and coaches to provide leadership and support in their high performance plan. Murray will also work closely with CSIO’s Sport Science and Sport Medicine practitioners to ensure the ISTs are aligned to the identified performance plans and requirements of the sport.

BIOGRAPHY:

David Bentley, PhD
Sport Physiologist
David has been involved in sports science and coaching for 20 years in Australia and Europe. David worked with the English sports system and completed a PhD in 2003 at the University of Bath, high performance centre, surrounding triathlon and physiological assessment of endurance athletes. Since that time, he has gathered a broad range of experiences in sports coaching, training and performance analysis in athletes ranging from Olympians to aspiring junior athletes in swimming, triathlon and other endurance sports. His coaching outcomes in triathlon have led to success at world championship level. David has a strong academic and applied sport science background having developed specialist experiences in areas resistance training for endurance performance; simulated and actual altitude training periodization; ergogenic aids including antioxidant and sodium bicarbonate supplementation/ pre-cooling in hot conditions. David has been the assistant editor of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport since 2007.

Jeff Louie, MSc
Sport Lab Manager
Jeff originally from North Vancouver, BC, pursued his BSc degree in Kinesiology at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON. He joined an exercise physiology and muscle biochemistry laboratory, which sought to quantify the physiological benefits from various exercise training protocols. Thereafter he acquired his MSc degree from the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa, studying exercise and thermoregulatory physiology with the Human and Environmental Physiology Research Unit. His research was aimed at investigating the physiological mechanisms underlying the human heat loss responses of cutaneous vasodilation and sweating, as well as determining to what extent factors such as aerobic fitness affect an individual’s ability to dissipate heat. Jeff has published in journals such as the Journal of Physiology, Physiological Reports, American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, and the Journal of Applied Physiology.

Murray McCullough
High Performance Athlete Development Advisor
Recognizing his passion for sport, Murray enrolled into the Kinesiology program at the University of Western Ontario and later obtained his degree with Honours Specialization in Kinesiology. Murray has experience in the Canadian High Performance system as an athlete, coach and technical leader. During his undergraduate studies Murray was a member of the Canadian Sailing Team and has competed at several international and World Cup events. Following his athletic career, Murray transitioned to the role of High Performance Coach with Ontario Sailing from 2009-2015. During this term, Murray worked as the lead manager for sailing’s involvement in the OHPSI program lead by the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, and was a key member in developing a high performance plan which transitioned several athletes from the Provincial to National team and furthermore onto National and International Podiums.

In 2015, Murray joined Wheelchair Basketball Canada as a High Performance Coordinator, working closely with Michael Frogley at the National Training Academy based at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto, Ontario.  In this role, Murray managed and coordinated domestic and international logistics and operations for the National Academy, Senior Men’s and Women’s and Junior Men’s and Women’s National programs. Murray had the pleasure of acting as the Team Manager for the Men’s and Women’s Paralympic teams during the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
