U Sports – TORONTO (U Sports) – U Sports International brought home 12 medals over the last eight months from competition during the 2016 world university championships.
 
This year, U Sports Team Canada earned three gold, three silver and six bronze medals in four sports – rugby sevens, rowing, wrestling and weightlifting.
In wrestling, reigning U Sports champion Allyssa Cleaves (48 Kg) of UNB, Concordia’s Linda Morais (60 Kg) and StFX’s Justina Di Stasio (75 Kg) all captured gold in Corum, Turkey from Oct. 25-30, while Cleaves’ Varsity Reds teammate Samantha Stewart – a bronze medallist at the 2014 WUC – won silver in the 53 Kg division. The team later added two bronze in the 63 Kg and 57 Kg events.
After finishing eighth in Rio earlier this year, 2016 Olympian Marie-Ève Beauchemin-Nadeaufrom the University of Sherbrooke captured silver in the 69 Kg weight class at the weightlifting world university championships in Merida, Mexico in November. The event marked her fifth appearance at the FISU level, including two previous world university championship and Summer Universiades each. Canada also won three additional bronze medals at the championship.  
In July, the Canadian rugby sevens squad captured the silver medal in Swansea, U.K, while in September Team Canada veteran Patricia Mara of Camosun College – a three-time FISU participant – secured bronze in lightweight women’s single sculls.  
In total, 146 athletes and coaches represented U Sports Team Canada at 13 world university championships in 2016 – including cross country, golf, futsal, rugby sevens, beach volleyball, orienteering, triathlon, rowing, waterski, badminton, shooting, wrestling and weightlifting – spanning from March to November.  
Next year, Canada will attend the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan (Jan.29-Feb.8) and the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei (Aug. 19-30).
