We are happy to invite you to the Workshop on Creating Inclusive Policies for Sport Organizations on December 6, 2022, from 1 am –1 pm MST (Edmonton time) that will be held online. The workshop link will be sent to registered organizations before the event.

The Workshop on Creating Inclusive Policies for Sport Organizations is organized by Action for Healthy Communities (AHC). AHC is a dynamic, community-based agency for people of all ages and backgrounds and provides settlement and capacity-building services to improve their lives and communities through a unique community-building process, including support, mentoring, and training. AHC supports underserved and marginalized communities in Edmonton and small centers across Alberta toward the creation of an inclusive society and addresses the barriers for the equity deserve groups to fully participate in society.

One of those projects is PASS (Participating in Arts, Sports, and Society). It was initiated to address the systemic barriers to the racialized new immigrant communities’ participation in sports activities which is an essential piece of social integration. This project scope includes a research project, sector conversation, promoting EDI policy, and creating opportunities for the affected communities to participate in sports. Within the project, AHC organizes different activities, programs, and events to identify and lower barriers that racialized newcomer youth face in sports participation and will develop recommendations for organizations and policymakers to eliminate those barriers.

The PASS research preliminary results showed that most sports organizations do not have EDI policies. Thus, this workshop is aimed to address that gap by helping sports organizations in creating EDI policies.

Objectives of the Workshop are:

        • Support for your organization to begin or continue to develop EDI policies
        • Lessons learned around policy to practice in sport
        • Core considerations to build into an EDI policy

The workshop will be facilitated by Laura McPhie, Director of INclusion INcorporated. Laura’s education includes two Masters that focused on Museum and Cultural Heritage, Business and Sport Administration, and Sexual Diversity Studies from Ohio University and University of Toronto.  Currently, she uses her lived experience as a queer, Indigenous, trauma survivor to design interactive trainings, education frameworks, and DEI policy advice for organizations. Laura’s DEI work spans industries, helping support the advancement of DEI knowledge of workplaces within sport, culture, and education institutions.
