Sport Tourism Manager - Sport Surrey

This position is directly responsible for coordinating the sport tourism initiatives for Tourism Surrey and the City of Surrey. This strategic position will ensure the City of Surrey successfully attracts and hosts sport events and meetings which are consistent with the goals of the Sport Tourism Strategy.
Tourism Surrey is responsible for the supervision of this position and the provision of office space and support. This role is a result of the completion of the Sport Tourism Strategy as adopted by City Council in 2013.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develops strategic partnerships and relationships and liaises with various community, regional, provincial and national sport organizations, hospitality businesses, sport facilities, and sponsors to support sport event initiatives within Surrey
Maintains the Surrey Network database
Produces content for inclusion in a quarterly e-newsletter
Acts as the key contact for stakeholders, responds to requests and inquiries, directs inquiries to the appropriate resources and makes industry connections as appropriate
Actively collects information and relevant updates pertaining to sport tourism industry trends, developments, research, funding, events and other information to be able to respond to community inquiries
Identifies and pursues leads, securing new sport related events in Surrey
Represents Surrey at sports related conferences, trade shows and meetings to promote Surrey as a sport hosting destination
Program Development, Coordination, Promotion, Communications & Implementation:
Implements the Sport Tourism Strategy including development of a work plan, identification of short and long-tem objectives and action plans, timelines, budgets, deliverables and performance measurement indicators
Plans and develops a series of sport hosting community resources and promote these resources to community stakeholders
Manages a database of available sport events and prepares or assists in the preparation of bids, as necessary
Educates community stakeholders on the benefit of sport to tourism and tourism to sport
Ensures quality and accuracy of sport tourism content on the Sport Surrey and Viasport website
Prepares monthly reports and presentations as required
Tracks economic impact of sporting event via, “STEAM” templates developed by the Canadian Sport Tourism Association
Ensures sport tourism initiatives remain relevant in Surrey and continues to assist community stakeholders with their sport tourism needs
Bachelor’s degree in Sport/Recreation Management or a related field with experience in sport event management, tourism, sponsorship, marketing and/or public relations.
Demonstrated understanding of the relationship between tourism and sports at a regional, provincial and national level.
An understanding of the regional, provincial and national sport environment and related agencies
Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and leadership skills, ability to work effectively in a team environment, ability to facilitate results with partners
Demonstrated success as a corporate spokesperson
Successful completion of a criminal record check is required and a class 5 driver’s license
