Volunteers

Recruiting, selection, references, training, recognition and retention is just as important with volunteers as it would be with paid employees. Often recruiting volunteers is a major hurdle faced by organizations. Why not try looking at the older or younger generations for a new pool of recruits? It is important to remember a proper background check is essential when someone wants to volunteer and this becomes critical when they will be working with children. Don’t forget this vital step just because the labour is free. Finally, work with your volunteers to ensure they have enough training. This will also help determine what keeps them motivated and happy, ensuring they continue to volunteer with your organization.

Recruitment

As school sporting programs continue to rely more and more on parents and volunteers and less on teaching staff, this article will look at how to go about recruiting, selecting and preparing a parent/volunteer to take on a coaching role within a school sporting program. As my fellow Sport Coordinators will attest, finding coaches to work with their school sporting teams is a very difficult job, but finding quality coaches is even harder.

Volunteer Coaches

To make volunteer coaches a positive experience for everyone and not a hassle, the key is to be cautious, yet optimistic. Attract & Keep Talented Volunteers

Volunteering is an important component of our society. It is definitely an integral part of our Association and you are proof of that fact! Being creative when attracting volunteers, providing good working conditions and attracting more volunteers (so that they do not get over-worked) are implications that your club must encourage at all times.

Background Check

The first step in an effective screening program is to understand that not everyone needs to be screened. Not every position within an organization poses the same degree of risk of harm to vulnerable members. Only those positions of trust and authority that involve unsupervised contact with minors require screening. The organization's policies should identify these positions and thus succinctly state who is subject to screening and who is not. It may very well be that after completing the analysis of that risk, only a handful of positions truly require screening.

Older Volunteers

A profile of sport volunteers suggests that older adults (65 years and older) are not part of the current "recruitment niche” in community sport. The typical sport volunteer is younger (35 to 44 years), male, employed full-time, with young dependents at home, and became involved through his or her child's participation in the sport. In light of this narrow sport volunteer profile, older adults may be "a new source of experience" to enhance the community sport volunteer workforce.
