Soccer
It seems everywhere you look these days you’re surrounded by soccer. Not only is it possibly the most popular grassroots sport, but soccer also has one of the biggest international sporting events. Have you ever stopped to consider how either a player or a coach gets from the grassroots level to the international stage? Here are a few things to think about: what makes a great soccer coach? Are soccer coaches looking for more than just your ability to play the game? What can I do to prevent injuries while playing? Should I just train my body or my mind too? Another great way to improve your soccer skills is to take in a Canadian National Team Event and learn from some of Canada's best players.

Talent Identification
Analysis of in-depth interviews with eight coaches of national youth soccer teams indicated these coaches identified talent in three ways. Second, the coaches' classificatory schemes are characterized by their preference for so-called "autotelic" players, that is, players that, from the coaches' perspective, exhibit a potential to learn, practice, and improve. Third, the study shows that talent, of which the coaches act as arbiters of taste, is socially configured in top-level soccer.

Effective Injury Prevention
We all know that soccer is by far the most popular sport on the planet, and despite this lofty position, the game continues to grow in terms of participation and fan interest. When athletes step onto their field of sport, soccer included, they assume the risk of a potential injury. In soccer, the most frequently reported time loss injuries are joint sprains (mostly to the ankle and knee) and muscle strains (mostly to the hamstrings and groin). These injuries present problems to the player, team, family, sport, and, given the number of participants worldwide, can be a burden on the health care system. And these injuries are not just about the short term. They can also affect the long-term health of the player with later problems such as early osteoarthritis. There are compelling reasons to make every effort at preventing injuries.

Effective On-Field Communication

Good communication can affect the motivation, expectations, emotional dispositions and behaviors of participants. One type of communication that often is neglected by coaches, but that deserves emphasis, is the discussion among on-field participants.
