We are bidding to host a multi-sport event and know that we have to incorporate an environmental sustainability component into our documentation. Is there anything out there that can help us with this aspect of our bid?

Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for contacting SIRC with your question regarding sporting events and environmental sustainability. The global sport community has recognized the importance of building environmental sustainability into their organizational structure, administration and event hosting practices. From the International Olympic Committee on down to local communities, sport organizations have been investing in environmental strategies.

There are a number of resources in the SIRC Collection as well as online that can provide you with guides and templates for working through your environment sustainability strategy:

• Vancouver 2010 and the International Academy of Sport Science and Technology came out with a Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit (SSET) after the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
• International Olympic Committee (1997/2005). Manual on Sport and the Environment /Manuel sur le Sport et L’Environnement.
