Dear Azan:
Thank you for emailing SIRC with your question regarding the evolution of basketball compared to soccer and rugby. In this email you will find several articles that briefly discuss the history of basketball as well as links to websites that contain information on the topic. In addition to this we have many other resources in the SIRC Collection that discuss this topic should you require additional information.
To provide you with several highlights:
- Basketball originated in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian who was teaching physical education in the United States at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts
- The origins of soccer (football) and rugby date back to the Chinese military between 3rd century and 1st century BC.
- It is thought that rugby originated from soccer in 1823 when a player grabbed the ball and ran with it.
- Both rugby and soccer have evolved in various ways to create different types of play. Some of these include: Cambridge Rules, Sheffield Rules, Australian Rules, Gaelic Football, IRFB, Rugby Union, etc.
