Drink Up!

Did you know that chocolate milk provides excellent muscle recovery, or cherry juice helps with aches and pains, or that excessive cola consumption can lead to problems with your muscles? We have heard how important it is to stay hydrated when exercising, but there is more to it than fluid intake. Of equal importance is what you drink and when you drink it. Different beverages have been proven to aid in recovery, help with cramps, boost energy and keep you hydrated. But if you drink them at the wrong time during your workout, you may actually be hurting your performance.

Chocolate Milk as a Post-Exercise Recovery Aid

This study out of Indiana University looks at chocolate milk as a recovery drink. In the study cyclists drank chocolate milk for recovery after an exhaustive workout,, followed by a short rest and then another exhaustive workout. Not only did the results of this study suggest that chocolate milk is an effective recovery aid between two exhausting exercise bouts, it also showed that chocolate milk was as good as or better than other beverages such as sports drinks in adding in recovery.

SIRC’s President and CEO Debra Gassewitz attended Mount Saint Vincent University’s 11th Annual MSVU Athletics Initiatives Dinner on Friday April 9, 2010 to present Mount Saint Vincent University student-athletes with the SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award and Mount Saint Vincent University with the SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Recognition Award.

SIRC’s COO David Roberts will attend Red Deer College’s Awards Banquet on Wednesday April 14, 2010 to present Red Deer College student-athletes with the SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award and Red Deer College with the SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Recognition Award.
