MICHAEL JANYK LEADS CANADA’S SLALOM SKI RACERS INTO LEVI

CALGARY, AB (November 13, 2009) – Michael Janyk (Whistler, BC), the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships slalom bronze medallist, is among 10 Canadians in Levi, FIN to kick off the World Cup slalom season this weekend.

Janyk is one of seven Canadian men scheduled to compete in Sunday’s men’s slalom while Brigitte Acton (Mont-Tremblant, QC) will be joined by Marie-Michèle Gagnon (Lac-Etchemin, QC) and Anna Goodman (Pointe Claire, QC) in Saturday’s ladies slalom.

Patrick Biggs (Orleans, ON), Julien Cousineau (Lachute, QC), Jean-Philippe Roy (Ste-Flavie, QC / Gatineau, QC), Ryan Semple (Montreal, QC), Brad Spence (Calgary, AB) and Trevor White (Calgary, AB) are the other Canadians in the men’s race.

Live timing will be available at www.fis-ski.com, the official website of the International Ski Federation (FIS).

“We are very excited about the progress from our slalom teams in recent seasons. Canada has had a reputation for downhill skiers for generations but this group of technical skiers is developing a reputation of its own within the World Cup,” said Chief Athletics Officer Max Gartner.

“We have focused a lot of resources on building a team of technical skiers and they have responded, with a couple of them having career years last season and of course Michael’s great result at the World Championships. Now our focus is on continuing to build momentum this season leading up to the Olympics in February,” Gartner added.
“We have seen in training camps, most recently at the national training centre in Panorama in early November, that they are a strong and confident group. Now it is time to see where we are at compared to the rest of the world’s best,” he said.

FIS indicated earlier this week that snow conditions in Levi were “outstanding,” with the race course frozen to a depth of 50 cm and temperatures hovering around -5°C.

Janyk will also be competing in an invitational dual slalom race in Moscow, RUS on November 21, 2009. It’s the second consecutive year for the event as interest in alpine ski racing is on the rise in Russia in advance of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, RUS in 2014.

It’s also worth noting that some members of Canada’s alpine ski team are turning heads in Levi related to a certain fashion statement being made. Several members of the men’s team are sporting thick moustaches, supporting a worldwide campaign known as “Movember” that raises awareness for prostate cancer research each year through the month of November. White said they hope to raise $1000 by the end of the month.
