Ontario Basketball – Ontario Basketball (OBA) announced Monday amendments to the Player and Coach Transfer Policy that was introduced in the summer of 2014. Following data that was collected throughout the 2015-16 OBA season and a membership survey, the Governance Committee assessed the Policy and made recommendations to the Board of Directors that were adopted.

“We faced some challenges throughout the implementation of the Policy but felt it was important to go through at least one full registration cycle before considering any changes,” said Greg Verner, President, Ontario Basketball. “The newly adopted changes are based on the information collected directly from our membership, and any major barriers for participating in our sport have been removed.”

Highlights include the reduction of the transfer fee from $300 to $50 and the removal of an appeal process. Moving forward, the $50 administrative fee (which will be split between OBA and the member club the member is leaving) will be mandatory and all monies collected by OBA will be invested directly in grassroots, community-based basketball programming.

“As was communicated since the inception of the Policy, reviews were ongoing and the voice of the membership was heard throughout,” said Jason Jansson, Executive Director, Ontario Basketball. “We are thankful for all the feedback, both positive and negative, and are eager to move forward with funds collected from transfers by executing programs across the province that benefit our member clubs with a focus on elevating participation numbers.”

Ontario Basketball is working with its new online platform partner, SportSavvy, to create a seamless and efficient web-based transfer process for the 2016-17 OBA season.
