Leibel a double winner at 2017 Speedo Western Championships

Swimming - ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Kyla Leibel of Red Deer, Alta., earned victories in the 200-m freestyle and 100-m backstroke on Thursday to highlight first day action at the 2017 Speedo Western Championships swimming competition.
Competing in the 13 and over age group, Leibel clocked 2:05.37 for her win in the 200-m freestyle with Jessica Luo of Victoria second in 2:06.23 and Amanda McCallum of Nanaimo, B.C., third in 2:07.35.
In the 100-m backstroke, Leibel took the gold decisively once again finishing in 1:05.75 with Alexandra Butler of Calgary second in 1:06.66 and Maria Olarescu of Kamloops, B.C. third in 1:06.71.
In the same age group, Ellie Maradyn of Edmonton took the 800-m freestyle and Avery Wiseman of Beaumont, Alta., the 200-m breaststroke.
The winners in the women’s 16 and over age group were Marit Anderson of Calgary in the 800-m freestyle, Meredith Levorson of Vernon, B.C., in the 200-m freestyle, Avery Movold of Prince George, B.C. in the 100-m backstroke and Sarah Knott of Edmonton in the 200-m breaststroke.
In the men’s 17 and over age group, winners were: Alexander Pratt of Calgary in the 200-m freestyle, Anders Klein of Edmonton in the 100-m backstroke and Jaren LeFranc of Penticton, B.C., in the 200-m breaststroke.
In the men’s 14 and under victors were Cole Pratt of Calgary in the 200-m freestyle, Justin Lisoway of Calgary in the 100-m backstroke, and Finlay Knox of Okotoks, Alta., in the 200-m breaststroke.
Competition continues through to Sunday at the Repsol Sport Centre. Preliminaries are at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
