Canada Finishes Preliminary Round with Win at IX Pan American Women’s Softball Championship

Softball Canada​ - Santo Domingo, D.R. – Team Canada wrapped up its preliminary round schedule with an 11-0 win over Panama at the IX Pan American Women’s Softball Championship. Sara Plourde (Baker Lake, N.B.) fired a four inning no-hitter, while five of Canada’s eight hits went for extra bases in the run rule victory.
 
Canada struck for six runs in the top of the first inning as Kelsey Jenkins(Delta, B.C.) got things started with a leadoff double and immediately scored on a triple by Joey Lye (Toronto, Ont.). After the red and white loaded the bases with a pair of walks, Victoria Hayward (Toronto, Ont.) hit a two-run single and Holly Speers (Surrey, B.C.) scored on a passed ball before Sarah Chow(Victoria, B.C.) hit a two-run double later in the inning.
 
In the second, Canada loaded the bases once again on a walk, an error and a single by Hayward. Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.) hit a sacrifice fly to push one in to score, and Carey-Leigh Vyse (Ohsweken, Ont.) followed that up with a two-run double as Canada increased its lead to 9-0. Salling hit a two-run homerun in the third to round out the scoring.

The only batter to reach base in Plourde’s no-hitter was a hit by pitch to lead off the second inning, but she bounced back by getting a fielder’s choice and two strikeouts. She struck out eight batters in her four innings of work. At the plate, Jenkins and Hayward each had two hits for Canada while Salling hit the homerun and walked twice. Lye added a triple with Vyse and Chow each connecting with a double.
 
Team Canada finished at the top of Pool B with an 8-0 record and will take on the second-place team from Pool A – Venezuela – at 6:30pm EDT on Friday. The other double life crossover will see the United States face Mexico.
